General consensus was that he wasn’t the strongest Off-Broadway, but IMO he was fantastic during this run. His chemistry with Michael was much stronger, and his performance was natural. It’s neat to see actors settle into that.
I mentioned seeing the show multiple times and he kind of chuckled and said, “Oh, I bet you’ve seen a few iterations of Ed then.” Which I find really cool. I know it’s not “the norm” but I appreciate when a performance evolves over time and is fresh, as opposed to be stuck in a mold and grow stale. I noticed LBB did the same thing during her Legally Blonde run.
I couldnt attend closing, but I was there Saturday night for the second to last. It was magnificent and the energy was palpable. I also waited after and everyone happily signed for our small but ecstatic crowd. While waiting we noticed Donna Murphy coming out as she had just seen the show. Someone asked her if she liked it and she replied with an overjoyed yes!. Seems like this show had so much love from the industry. Its a shame it never found its audience.

Yes! That’s why I waited so long to get tickets, hoping to see Claybourne. Still glad I got to see it although it would have been nice to see the understudies bow closing night.

Claybourne is so dreamy and I think would have made a great Ed. Yes I'll admit I was one of the people hoping to see Will or Claybourne perform (as well as Rob and Antoinette.) I thought about it more and given how Rob Morean covers Alan and Dave, technically it's possible for both Michael Hsu Rosen and Jack DiFalco to be out on the same performance and have Rob cover both of them! This case is true for Antoinette LaVecchia who covers Laurel and Ma Beckoff as well.
