What are the odds of a movie like Tick Tick Boom winning the Oscar for Best Director? Seems more like a passion project to me. Now Little Mermaid on the other hand - THAT'S him working on the EGOT!

Interesting that Steven Levenson is penning script.

No, for sure! I doubt he'd win a Direction award, but this is yet another credit he's adding onto his rapidly building film career. With MoanaMary Poppins Returns, his work on Star Wars, and now the upcoming In the Heights, Little Mermaid, and Tick, Tick, Boom..., dude is clearly getting invested in the film space!

With those people behind the scenes, watch this become part of the whole quad of new musical fans.

As long as he stays behind the camera, and casts performers who can actually sing.

Tick Tick Boom is...a weird choice for a film adaptation, to say the least. The show itself barely hangs together.

Love Lin, as a creator of musicals.

I like the music/story of tt..b more than I could ever like RENT.

I thought DEH was borderline negligent in it's fetishizing and romanticizing of mental illness and it's fetishizing and romanticizing of sociopathic/narcissistic tendencies.

I can't say that I see how this is all going to come together.

But this can probably be done on a budget less than $10,000,000 and I can see it becoming something like the Hedwig and the Angry Inch film (something that was done very cheap and turned out great).

I'm cautiously optimistic?

(but I can also see this press release being the first and last we hear about this project)

oh WOW.  Didn't see this coming at ALL.  Excited to see who he casts.  Will there be more than 3 roles?

I know casting is probably still a bit ways off but I’m interested to see who they might cast.

Are we sure he won’t cast himself?

He did say he wanted to direct a movie musical one day. With this and his other projects, I hope he doesn’t burn out

I never seen Tick Tick Boom but I hope it has the same emotional energy as Larson’s score for Rent. Other than that, it’s wonderful Miranda getting work as a director.

Of all the musicals to adapt to the screen. They chose...this? Mildly infuriating.

I have a feeling for his directorial debut, he'll stay behind the camera. But star actors might be attracted to working with him (and his co-producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer) on a more offbeat project.

We also don't know what kind of distribution this could have, which might also depend on star-power. As a lower-budget movie-musical, it could be an enticing property for someplace like Netflix, Amazon, Apple, or even a prestige TV network.

If there's anyone who should be at the helm of a piece like this, it's Miranda, with his reverence for the theatre artists who paved the way for him.

It's not like directors are lining up around the corner for this. I'd be shocked if this film made any money if it actually ever gets made.

There's no fanbase for TTB. How are they supposed to make a profit? You can't do it on Lin's name alone! Overall, this is a dumb idea.  Why not DEH? That movie would do great in the box office!

Maybe because LMM doesnt relate to an emotionally manipulative cliche tale of teenage social anxiety, but to a real story of a man struggling to balance the realities of life and lack of success with his passion and desire to be an artist. Go read the article he wrote for the New York Times when he did TTB back in 2014. This story clearly means a lot to him and not everything is about how much money one can make. This will likely have a tiny budget anyway.

I mean both tick tick boom and dear Evan Hansen could be movies. I don’t think the other OP meant that Lin would be involved in a DEH adaptation but I’d be shocked if in ten years time dear Evan Hansen doesn’t have a movie screen adaptation. I think the popularity for that is there.

I'm pretty sure the only reason this is happening is because Lin now has the power to pursue a passion project like this. Without him I doubt this would be greenlit. So I still think 'why not DEH' is a silly question when it very much seems like this will be LMM's baby.

Yes there will likely be a DEH film one day (although 10 years seems optimistic and it definitely wouldn't be happening anytime now) but it will be a completely different thing and Levenson is the only person here that would likely be involved.
