Accented Musicals

So my high school doesn't announce the musical that we do in the spring until incredibly late into the year. My director has given me two hints. 1. Its a female prominent cast/female lead. 2. They're different dialects. I want to know what you all think. I have a couple guesses. 9 to 5, Evita, West Side Story, and My Fair Lady. And before any of you say Les Mis it wont be, our director loves Les Mis.

I'm confused by your last sentence. Is the third hint that your director doesn't like the chosen show?

Our directors dont ever do shows that are their favorites. I dont know why but its just always been a thing. Thats why for example we have never done Grease

West Side Story is the closest thing I can guess. There is a heavy male cast though, so that doesn't align perfectly. I've never seen 9 to 5, do they have accents in that show? Maybe Light in the Piazza also. There are two strong female leads, and Italian accents.

9 to 5 has a southern dialect for most characters. We live in a southern state so 9 to 5 wouldn't be to much of stretch for us to do southern accents

Is it because they cannot stand the show to be butchered by high school students? I don't think they'll be able to do Les Mis anyway since it's currently on an equity tour.  Usually there are licensing restrictions. Different dialects could go so many places...Can't be Evita though since it's actually 2 male leads vs 1 female lead with 1 single solo for another female.

The only two characters I remember having a Southern accent were Doralee and her husband. The show is set in NYC (if I recall correctly), so I don't think most of them do have Southern accents. Though of course since you are in the South then the Northern or NYC accents could also count as dialect work.

If you do 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, William Barfée has an accent aigu.

Is the show BOTH female heavy and female lead....or  is it one or the other?   Most of the shows the OP suggest are not female heavy

Just because there is a tour, doesn't mean the right are universally pulled.  USUALLY, it is only restricted in town its performing for a month or so surrounding the performance of the tour.   I directed it while a tour was going on....the tour was simply NOT slated for Boston around our production time.  Additionally, they might not care as much because of the HS version of LM.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
