Forgive me if you guys have already discussed this--was anyone else thrown by the changes to the lyrics in Beneath a Moonless Sky? In the London version the Phantom says Christine found him "in that time when the world thought me dead." But in the Australia version, Christine thought he was dead, too, and it's never quite specified WHEN she sought out the Phantom. She does day she was "tormented by [her] choice," but she had already chosen Raoul early on in POTO.

But if she thought he died at the end of Phantom, they must have had sex before he kidnaps her for the last time at the end of the show. Which makes no sense, if they'd already been together and he'd rejected her. And the big kiss at the finale of POTO is meaningless--they've already done that and more.

Am I misinterpreting? Anyone know what the lyrics are for the US tour?

It's not the tour cast. It's extremely misleading for them to have it listed as the "Tour CD." I hope they correct that.

I've only seen the London version live, but I heard the lyric changes from the Australian version and I believe the tour kept those, so if you have seen that version, it should be the same. http://www.metrolyrics.com/beneath-a-moonless-sky-australia-lyrics-love-never-dies-australia.html

I assumed that the line "I stole to your side, tormented by my choice" was in reference to leaving with Raoul in the final lair, and then after said moonless night that they discuss, the Phantom left and at some point faked his death?

I wouldn't think too hard on it. It's a beautiful show, visually, but the book is and always has been a major weak spot.

Ha! Not thinking too hard on it might be the best course of action. I'm finding myself in a bit of a love-hate relationship with this show, honestly. It just seems unfortunate to write in a pretty glaring plot hole when it wasn't even there in the first version of the song. I did initially really like the idea that she thought he was dead just as everyone else did, until I realized that this would profoundly change the significance of the events at the end of POTO. Ah, well. I'll try to let it go. LOVE NEVER DIES - US Tour

I don't think that's what the line means.  It sounds like she was tormented leaving Raoul just before they're wed to return to the Phantom.

Hmm. For me, I was not sure why she would steal to the phantom’s side, sleep with him and be ready to swear her love unless she’s felt bad about leaving the Phantom in the first place. I thought she meant she was tormented that she had left him and came back to rectify that, but then he left her while she was sleeping. But I also always thought it was relatively unbelievable that she could have found him after he disappeared anyway.

The line still makes more sense than “I stole to your side to tell you I must go” as it was originally, whether she was tormented by her choice to leave either of the men, I guess.

See, that's what I thought, too--especially in the original version of the song. But why, then, in the Australian version, did she think the Phantom was dead? She must have known he survived the fire that everyone else thought killed him, because she went to find him afterwards.

She never saw/heard from him again after their night together, so my understanding is that she eventually concluded he was dead.

I don't know what fire you're referring to.

Actually, there's no mention of a fire in the prologue of the original Phantom either. The only time a fire was mentioned was in "That's The Place That You Ruined, You Fool!", which was a very brief exchange between Fleck and Giry near the beginning of the original concept recording for Love Never Dies. I don't believe it was ever included in the London production, but if it was, it was very short-lived. smiley

Yeah, my brain smooshed the fire in the prologue to LND in the original album with the prologue in POTO and decided that the Opera House in Paris burned down, instead of Phantasma on Coney Island. Need. More. Coffee.

Wow, that's quite convoluted. No wonder you struggled to follow the plot! wink

I believe that's exactly what is meant.

Clearly, it's a clunky and ambiguous lyric, either way.  Personally, I've always found Beneath a Moonless Sky to be far too vague and clumsy.  Beautiful music, but the lyrics don't serve the plot very well.

On Friday I got the "new" CD of Love Never Dies that they are selling on the US Tour.  Have to admit I'm pretty amazed how they were able to update the original recording of the Australian cast with the changes he made to the score.  It sounded seamless - you couldn't tell where the new recording came in... and kudos for getting Ben Lewis to record the revised "Beauty Underneath."  I was surprised that I liked the new Beauty Underneath.  And the additions they made for it in Act I and II.  Impressive all around.  (on a side note, now that you can hear how they were able to revise a recording so well, I'm surprised that ALW didn't do the same with Sunset Boulevard changing the overture and subsequent reprises of "The Greatest Star of All" in the US recording)

For LND fans, definitely worth the purchase

Thanks for sharing, good to hear!

Funny, I saw the Sunset revival five times and I don't think I ever noticed the changes that were supposedly made. Were they that subtle, or am I just dim?

"Andrew Lloyd Webber has chosen, 32 years after co-creating the still-playing longest-running Broadway musical in history, to revive the major characters of 'The Phantom of the Opera' and bring them to this side of the Atlantic. Has he succeeded? Most definitely, if the current production of 'Love Never Dies' at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts is any indication."

WOW.   Nice review...thanks for the link!  Question though...what’s up with Gardar?  He seems to be out an awful lot.  He never once appeared in Detroit and I didn’t see him when I saw the show in Orlando. Bronson is so amazing in the role I can’t possibly imagine Gardar being “better”.

I hear Gardar has been getting sick a LOT during this tour. I’m really starting to wonder if there’s something more to it, but that’s not our business.
