I am traveling to NY from Portland for one of my theater trips (this one solo). I go to broadway and off broadway sows alone fairly often so I am used. I just bought a ticket to the Josie and the Pussycats show at 54 below - the seating looks like all tables for groups is there a bar or other seating someone alone can sit at and not feel weird?
There is Bar and bar rail seating along with tables. Sit where you want. You won't feel weird or out of place. The tables are not all for groups. Groups mostly sit in the booths. Have fun!
I travel to New York alone quite often. At 54 Below I have often been seated at a table with other people. Last time I was seated next to the mother of Christine Ebersole's personal assistant at one of Ms Ebersole's shows. After the show the mother introduced me to Ms Ebersole who even joined the table for a while. It was one of the highlights of that trip..
You do have to specify bar rail seating when you buy your ticket, though, so that isn't an option you can get if you bought a general admission ticket. But it doesn't matter, everyone is sat with people they don't know to some extent.
The bar rail seats are perfect if you want to enjoy it alone. I have a cousin who buys a single bar-rail seat for his favorite performers, gets there early, orders a vodka and something to eat, and reads the The New Yorker until the show starts.
But it's also one of the friendliest places in New York for people who are seated together, whether at the long tables or the four-tops.
Please do NOT be intimidated at all. There is not a bad seat in the house. I have gone alone and was seated with others. I am an extrovert so I enjoyed sitting with others and chatting. Happened to be the "Side Show Added Attractions" so of course it was a room full of fans. I am certain that whoever you sit with will be fun to talk to or as PalJoey said - sit at the bar if you prefer to be more to yourself. I enjoy eating there. Check out the menu ahead of time so you are familiar with the prices and don't get stuck if you do not want to pay the prices. Enjoy!!
If you already bought a ticket, you had to choose a seating section. If you chose main dining room they will seat you at cabaret style tables with other people. It's no big deal. However, you need to specify when you buy the ticket which section you want, so if you didn't buy a bar seat but want to sit at the bar, you'll have to call them.
Thanks everyone for the thoughtful replies! Sounds like it will be fine either way. I will probably be in desperate need of a good time as I am seeing China Doll earlier in the night (bought my ticket before previews started).

There is StubHub, maybe you can get face for it and switch shows?!
