Saw it tonight. Whew!

Those who think AUGUST OSAGE COUNTY is hard-hitting family drama won't be able to handle this. It's perhaps Donald Margulies' masterpiece and so, so, soooooooo far above his more popular works like TIME STANDS STILL and DINNER WITH FRIENDS.

I simply have no words. Other than see it. And that just about everyone involved deserves an Obie award.

Article about Diane Davis, who plays the mentally disturbed daughter

I can't stop thinking about this production. Has anyone seen it? I think it's sold out but definitely rush it. The play is on a par with VIRGINIA WOOLF as a waking nightmare. In the moment after the final blackout and before curtain call, you could have heard a pin drop.

What's it like? Because I hated TImes Stands Still and Dinner with Friends. I hate plays where people just sit/stand around and bitch. I need a plot.

Was the rush only "if available"? Any change of an extension?

It's a completely different animal from TIME STANDS STILL and DINNER WITH FRIENDS. Not nearly as middlebrow. It's angry and it's searing. And, yes, it's sold out. Hopefully, they will extend.

Borstal Boy said it beautifully, angry and searing, exactly. Actually I have not seen this production but in the mid eighties I was reading plays for the Eugene O'Neill Playwrights Conference and was assigned The Model Apartment. I don't know what plays of Margolis I was aware of then, but I think my vision of him was that of a bright but "safe" playwright. I still remember how stunned I was as I read this play. I thought then that it was incredibly daring, and might be a little too threatening for a "normal" audience. So I am really thrilled at the reviews and the recognition that the play is receiving now. It seems to have become extremely hard to move successful off Broadway not for profit theater productions (like The Whale, or Detroit) to a commercial off Broadway venue, but I am hoping that a way is found to continue the life of this production.

Too bad more people didn't see it before the reviews came out and tickets were widely available. But I'm glad it's selling out. Diane Davis is giving a truly remarkable performance, and this is about as good a production of the play we're likely to see. I'd love for it to extend, but I don't think that's possible.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I'm curious why Primary Stages didn't choose to move this play to Broadway or their summer show with Randy Harrison (instead of Bronx Bombers). I enjoyed both of these shows quite a bit; well-acted dramas.

BECAUSE BRONX BOMBERS IS BEING FINANCED BY THE YANKEES AND MLB! (really not that hard to figure out)

I don't think "chose" is the right word, in terms of a move. Like the previous poster said,
Bronx Bombers is moving because someone found the financing to bring it to Broadway, obviously if it opens near spring, the producers expect there to be a lot of interest from the upscale baseball crowd. By themselves, I doubt that Primary Stages has the money to finance a move to off Broadway (I doubt that at this point due to the subject matter, and vision of the play, anyone would consider moving it to Broadway) by itself; the hope is that a few other serious producers might want to finance an off Broadway production.
