I have no idea why stories like this continue to shock me but they do.

It sounds like my town. I am sick of incidents like these. Someday ridicule and threats like these will be put to rest. Hopefully soon.

She had a lot more restraint that I would have, I'll say that. Not only was the behavior homophobic, but you absolutely do not touch a stranger's kid like that.

I agree, but it bothers me how she starts the article on how "Manly" her child is. Her child is 2! I don't understand why she didm;t call the cops and have the guy arrested immediately!

Leave it to a liberal to make a big deal over this. She admits in the article that all the old ladies were charmed by her little boy. Then some drunk comes up and suddenly the world is full of hateful bigots that she has to rush home and blog about. Why didn't she deck the guy? Why didn't she call the police? Because then she couldn't get attention and sympathy. But then she has to lecture the rest of the world about what she herself wasn't willing to confront. What was she doing in WalMart anyway? I thought liberals hated the place.

See it for what it was. Some drunk guy that should have been arrested. But because she didn't take action, he's left to harrass other people. If it was Sarah Palin, she would have decked him and asked questions later.

I found the "My son loves the color pink AND Spiderman" start to the article rather distasteful...that's probably the wrong word, too.

But nonetheless, as much as I admire this lady for writing this piece, she should have reported the douchebag who dared touch another stranger's son. If not to the police, how about Walmart security?

I love how Goth knows EXACTLY what happened and what the mother was thinking.

Yeah, why should anyone make a big deal about a stranger grabbing something off of a 2 year old's head and then warning the Mom he will be shot over it someday. Just a good ole' American having some fun, eh Goth?

Goth's ignorance is more shocking to me then this story.

romantico, I didn't say nobody should make a big deal about it. The mother obviously didn't make a big deal over it and now wants everyone's sympathy and to lecture the world. She should have done something right when it happened. But she just wants a pity party "Oh poor me, everyone stood around watching and nobody did anything about it." Why didn't she ask for a store clerk to help or report the incident to store security?

That's not the point of the article and you friggin know it. The article is rather apolitical and the writer never mentions her own political leanings. You're the one applying the lens of liberal/conservative here.

First sentence

"Leave it to a liberal to make a big deal over this"

The mother did not make a big deal over this? Really?

I don't blame her for not wanting to start something.Who knows what this guy would have done. YOU NEVER TOUCH ANOTHER PERSON'S CHILD! What provoked this guy to get SO ANGRY? He did not like that a 2 year old BOY was wearing something pink.

I would have handled this different. However, in the heat of the moment you don't always think clearly. She was probably relieved that her son was safe and the guy left.

I really can't believe how you think this is the mother's fault.Oh, and again,I am simply amazed at how you can tell what she is going through and what her 'REAL INTENTIONS' were.

I'm beginning to believe the results of that study that said that conservatives lack empathy. Thinking of that, it doesn't surprise me that Goth can't imagine as he reads the story, the shock the woman felt as the event transpired and how frozen somebody can be when they can't even believe what is happening right in front of their eyes. Your brain keeps telling you that the awful thing you're seeing can't possibly be happening and it doesn't even hit you until the danger has passed what a dangerous situation you were just in.

People who have been victiimized usually need some distance from the event to process what has happened to them.

As for Goth's response, it strikes me as of a piece with that Republican politician who laughed about how the liberals in Boston must have wished they had guns when the government told them to stay in their houses while the cops searched for the Tsarnevs. Never, EVER trust a conservative's response to people who have been victimized and traumatized. They imagine, like Marky Mark, that if they and THEIR families hand been on one of the jets on September 11, that plane sure as crap wouldn't have gone down. They often say out loud that that woman who has been raped MUST have been dressed in a way that brought it on herself. And if an adult bully was cruel to their two year old, THEY would have summoned super powers and flown the creep directly to jail without even so much as an arrest and trial and conviction.

Some humans are just non-confrontational and keep quiet in part due to their shock until the "coast is clear" before processing their anger. I don't blame her for not wanting to provoke someone who she wasn't sure how far would go with the physical assaulting, especially with potential harm coming to, or in front of, her child.

However, one should always expect to encounter at least one unpleasant idiot when venturing into the hell that is Walmart. Be yourself, but be vigilante too.

The whole interaction with the man likely took less than 90 seconds. Just WHEN was she suppose to call the police or even store security. He was already gone. When you are faced with this kind of aggression, you are more shocked than anything.

She's a writer, of COURSE she's going to write about it. That's what writers DO. I think her retrospection was more about no one manking any attempt to even make sure that she and her son were ok, yet alone no one trying to get the man away from the kid.

My kid use to wear dresses all the time as a toddler, he loved dress up. He loved playing with Polly Pockets. He sounds a lot like this kid, loved "boy" stuff and "girl" stuff. I can see her point in mentioning that, just showing your kid is accepting and well rounded. BTW, my daughters favorite dress up was being a fireman. She was very clear that she was a fireMAN.

I think the mother should "pay it forward." That's the way conservatives think anyway. They should get a dose of their own medicine.

The next time this mother sees a toddler playing with a plastic gun, she should rip it away and smash it into pieces on the ground. Then say, "You'll thank me later. You could get shot, growing up to be a rednecked, NRA-loving, backwards, Republitard asshole. I'm just doing you a favor, kid."

I bet you did. Sorry to burst your bubble, kid (or is it broadway guy?).

Anyway, regarding the article, I don't really see the political leanings here. Goth - you're projecting it onto the article and you know it. Granted, romantico is hardcore and primarily posts on here about political issues... But that doesn't mean there is a political angle here.

Goth, her outrage isn't only with the man who insulted, touch and took her child's headband (as if there would be something unjustified about that), it's also with the fact that although many people saw this, no one said anything. Silence in the face of hate is extremely hurtful, and socially ominous, no matter the political affinities of those who are the objects of that hate.

The funniest part of Goth's repellently unsympathetic post is his assertion that if somebody messed with Ma Palin's kid that she wouldn't take to the press about it.

My only comment about this incident is consider the source:

The man was overly large with a bushy beard and a camouflage shirt with the arms cut off. He had tattered shorts and lace-up work boots with no laces. I could smell the fug of cigarette smoke surrounding him, and there was a definite pong of beer on him.

Nope, not me. The very nano second that man touched my kid I would be dialing 911 at the same time as screaming out through the store to stop that man, he just assaulted my kid.
