Ana was amazing! The only actress I have seen in the role who actually acted it as well as she sang. Most of the others I have seen seem to get caught up in the vocal histrionics and forget that they are telling a story, not just performing a parade of belting numbers in a concert while happening to be in green face. I saw her in Chicago (once from the nosebleeds) and it was really quite remarkable, she commanded that huge barn, which many other notable performers haven't been able to. She was a bit older and more mature than many Elphies which was a bit of an impairment earlier in the show, but in the second act it totally worked to her advantage. I gained so much respect for her putting in such a thoughtful performance in a show that often gets glossy and Disney-fied.
I saw her on Broadway. The comedic acting timing in someone who can also belt was ah-maz-zing. She and Mandy Gonzalez remain my favorite two I have seen (and I've seen the show upwards of 20 times now)
Ana Gasteyer sang the role best among the actresses I've seen. Gasteyer had good, solid vocal technique and she sang "Defying Gravity" without the gratuitous riffing that other women who have played Elphaba fell victim to as if they were singing on "American Idol."
She also sang quite a bit on various sketches during her SNL days, including one of my favorite recurring duos from that era (with Will Ferrell) as Bobbi Mohan Culp, with her husband Marty. Even when she was singing as such an over the top, ridiculous character you could tell that she had a lot of natural talent to back that up.
Found YouTube video of her as Elphaba... Defying Gravity!! I am no singing expert so I won't overanalyze but I think she did very well.. I didn't know she did Wicked..
Saw her in the Chicago company when it first opened the summer of '05. She was fabulous. Her acting was nuanced and beautiful. Her singing was top notch. She and Kate Reinders were wonderful together, as well. Loved it, loved her. Wish she'd return to the stage.
I have a copy OP. I will say that while she didn't do a "bad" job in the role, she also wasn't the best I've seen either...and I've only seen three (two of them on tour).
anything you do let it come from you and it will be new.
