Thanks for the replies. I am leaning toward Kinky Boots. We opted for Evita, Once, and Book of Mormon last year. Probably should have selected Newsies over Evita.
I would love to hear any other comments/thoughts on Kinky Boots v. Newsies.
Another voice that can only speak to Newsies- it is a fun, traditional good ole musical with great choreography and hot chorus boys. I just went b/c I had an open spot in my show seeing schedule, and lucked into awesome seats for 70 bucks, and I am very glad that I saw it.
You have to remember, not too many of us have yet SEEN Kinky Boots. (but are looking forward to it)
As anything, it depends on taste.
I didn't love Newsies. Yes the choreo is impressive -- but it is the star of the show -- not the book, not the score. It's serviceable but not really a great show
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I've seen both... I liked both, but if I had to choose between the two, I would lean more to Newsies. I had fun at both but just a little more at Newsies.
Kinky Boots. Billy Porter as Lola was the best part of the show. Stark Sands as Charlie & Annaleigh Ashford as Lauren were good. The Angels were fab. Most of the songs were good. There were two songs that seemed a bit flat, comparing to the others. There's more of a complicated story (duh). The choreograpy is fine for this show; it's not as 'show-stopping' as Newsies'. This is based on the Chicago version so it might changed in the Broadway version.
Newsies. The choreography is the best part of the show as well as the cast's enthusiasm. Corey Cott, Kara Lindsay, and Ben Fankhauser are wonderful. Each of the Newsies have their own personality & they bring them out throughout the show. For instance, Ryan Breslin's Race is fantastic. The story is simpler and the songs are catchy and expand on the movie's.
I have not yet seen KINKY BOOTS, but I absolutely LOATHED "Newsies". Not one honest moment anywhere in that show. And the choreography was AWFUL for the simple reason that it had absolutely NOTHING to do with anything else in that show. It did not feel appropriate to the characters, the plot, the setting. It came from nowhere and hit the audience over the head with its "Look at ME! Look what I can do!!" mentality. Awful, simply awful!
I would always go see something new. Saw Kinky in Chicago and it was an exciting, touching, audience pleaser. Cyndi Lauper has written the best score I've heard on Broadway in years. See Newsies over Kinky if the original movie has some special place in your heart. I found the unending anthems tiring as was the very athletic choreography - physicality over creativity. I found newsies to be very mechanical and not very heartfelt. Haven't seen Matilda, Hands On A Hardbody or Motown yet but Kinky is miles above anything that has opened or started previews this year and much better than all of the musicals the musicals that opened last year.
I saw Newsies but not Kinky Boots yet. Has it even started previews yet? As far as Newsies goes, the musical numbers & dancing were fantastic but I found the story to be kind of boring. It's about history so if you like history then you would probably like it better than I did. I know you were just wondering about Kinky Boots & Newsies BUT I also saw Hands on a Hardbody in La Jolla and it was fantastic.
Saw Kinky Boots in Chicago and it was...okay. The book was a bit awkward (hope they fix the clumsy ending as well as the love story) and the score had nice moments, but not very memorable with several songs sounding rather unfinished.
Billy Porter as Lola was the best part of the show.
Wish I could say the same. His speaking voice was clearly strained, though he pushed out the belt with all his might, but his acting really lacked range. I've known many a drag queen and almost all of them are capable of carrying on regular conversations without putting a grand diva emphasis on every other word or treating every sentence as a proclamation, which probably contributed most to Porter's vocal struggles. He somehow managed to make every spoken line vocally taxing, which only made the character flat and disingenuous.

I've only seen 'Newsies' and while the dancing is phenomenal, I did not like the story. It left much to be desired and was rushed at the end...judging from the post above, and considering it's the same book writer, who knows what will happen with 'Kinky Boots;' but that said, it depends on what you like.
Are you traveling with children? If not, 'Kinky Boots' will most likely contrast 'Matilda' and 'Pippin' nicely.
