"TO LOVE ANOTHER PERSON IS TO SEE THE FACE OF GOD"- LES MISERABLES---
"THERE'S A SPECIAL KIND OF PEOPLE KNOWN AS SHOW PEOPLE... WE'RE BORN EVERY NIGHT AT HALF HOUR CALL!"--- CURTAINS
My immediate thoughts?: How many drinks can Anjelica Huston throw in 2 hours? How many scarf changes will Debra Messing have in the first 30 minutes alone? How many times will we hear people insisting that Karen's voice is a ray of sunshine directly from Buddha? How many times will we hear "That's so Marilyn" during the show? Will "That's So Marilyn" become a spinoff show on Disney Channel ala That's So Raven? Will Megan Hilty FINALLY get to play an emotion or action other than anger, jealousy, spoiled brat or eavesdropping through a rehearsal door? How smashed should I be before Smash?
And then, after all of those, what am I doing on Feb. 5 and if I'm not free can I get someone to DVR the premiere for me? My frenemy relationship with this show knows no bounds.
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
Why does everyone have to be so negative about this show? No one is forcing you to watch it and personally, I find it incredibly entertaining. It's a much better musical TV show than Glee, in my opinion. I feel as though people feel the need the over analyze EVERYTHING these days. If you don't enjoy it, don't watch it and don't comment on it. The only problem I have with this show is Katherine McPhee but that's just my opinion. Otherwise I believe it is a very well written TV show even though it may not replicate exactly what happens when creating a Broadway musical.
Seriously greenguy? Personally I think Katharine McPhee is the best thing about it. Ivy/Megab makes me want to throw things at the tv. Debra's part is bland. Anjelica's appearance intrigues me, in a 'is she really a she?' kinda way. And the rest are very forgettable.
Remember that pilot that had Nobert Leo Butz snorting cocaine off a Wicked playbill?
That is what I want to see in SMASH.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I just think Katherine acts far too naive and innocent and it just comes off as fake. There's no way someone who acts like her would ever get into professional musical theatre. To make it big in that business you have to have a backbone. I don't think it's the writer's fault at all, though. I think the way she holds herself and the tone in her voice is way too innocent. The writing for everyone else's part is great and incredibly thought-provoking, especially Anjelica Houston's character.
"How many scarf changes will Debra Messing have in the first 30 minutes alone?"
I read the afghan scarves were cut from the new season. So what exactly besides Tom does Julia still have this season?
I like Glee for what it is and I like this show too. Nashville is probably a better comparison for Smash in what the shows are trying to do with their subject and backdrop.
