Jarethan said: "Personally, I enjoyed Star, but IMO it paled next to the Judy Garland version. Gaga surpassed my expectations, and gave an excellent performance, but I don't think she was better than people who were not even nominated in her category, e.g., Julia Roberts, Tony Collette, Nicole Kidman, off the top of my head, or Judy Garland, for that matter. Did she really give a performance that justified a first-time-out win?

.Look at Jessica Lange...she gave a GREAT performance as Frances, but the movie happened to open the same year as Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice, so she was 'snubbed', i.e., didn't win; than she wins an Oscar for an okay performance in a mediocre movie, partially as a consolation prize for Frances, and mostly because she won in a really rotten year for actresses.
"

Sorry for the edit, Jarethan.  First, I'd like to thank you for mentioning Julia Roberts.  I've never thought of her as a great actor, but she is wonderful in "Ben Is Back" and I am sorry to see her performance not get the attention it deserves.  Second, regarding Jessica, I imagine you are referring to her Best Actress Oscar for "Blue Sky" and not her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "Tootsie," which was largely considered her consolation prize for not winning for the same year's "Frances."

By the way, I love Ethan Hawke but I did not like "First Reformed."  He is very good in it, God knows, but the film, which I thought would be right up my alley, left me totally cold.  Last year I would love to have seen him nominated for "Maudie, " a beautiful and overlooked gem.  Sallie Hawkins should have been nominated for it (instead of "The Shape of Water"Wow... A STAR IS BORN snub?! as well.

Awards!  What can you say?

Not sure how this has been kept under wraps for so long, but the trucker-looking guy who cruises Freddie Mercury in the movie is...

Adam Lambert?!?

I watched A Star Is Born again yesterday, and it really is overrated, especially Gaga's performance. I enjoy the first half of the movie quite a bit, but, once Ally's star begins to rise, it turns into a by-the-numbers melodrama, and Gaga's acting starts to ring false, and just not believable. It's only when she's singing that she's uniformly excellent. In my opinion, Bradley Cooper deserves the attention that she's getting. It's a Moulin Rouge! situation, where the lead actor is the heart of the movie, while the lead actress gets all the awards buzz. Also, if we're talking about better performances this year, Amandla Stenberg in The Hate U Give and both of the main actresses from Roma act circles around Gaga.

I saw the movie last night and was surprised by how dull it was. The first half-hour or so, improbable as it was, was entertaining. But from the moment for the producer approaches her, it turns into a rote, unwritten melodrama that left me largely disinterested. It doesn't help that Lada Gaga's "pop" songs weren't very good. (We know she and her writers are capable of better.) The relationship between Jackson and his brother didn't pack the punch it should have (and it didn't help when I often didn't understand what Jackson was saying anyway). I didn't care about Ally and her father, who were basically comic relief. The Grammy sequence felt over-the-top to me. And then, towards the end, we find out that Jackson tried to kill himself when he was quite young. Which seems, uh, relevant to the story they were trying to tell?

I thought the acting by Lady Gaga was OK, but she only really shines when she's singing, especially early on. That's no small thing in a movie that's about an unknown singer with star quality. But the weak script does her no favors as the movie plods along, and she couldn't overcome it. Bradley Cooper is a good actor, but he pretty much does the same thing almost from the start of the film. It got old.
