Was really rooting for Andy Karl. Though Groundhog Day had its many flaws, he was perfection.
Also bummed about Great Comet not picking up a lot of big awards.
But most of all....
Did Bette Middler really need this award? What a pretentious piece of $&!@. Disgusting ego and atitiude. That speech did nothing but further my disdain for her.

-I love you Come From Away, but that did NOT deserve Best Direction. Great Comet deserved it 500x more -Great Comet deserved Best Score more than Dear Evan Hansen, but DEH has gorgeous music. -Great Comet or Come From Away deserved Orchestrations way more than DEH
Surprised GHD got nothing. I've seen it twice now with plans to go again and I really think it's an enjoyable night of theater. I haven't seen Comet, but even I know they deserved more than they got.
It's a flat out joke that Comet lost Direction. I really liked Come From Away and would have been happy if it won Best Musical, but name me one director currently working who could have pulled off the insane feat that Rachel Chavkin has. No on deserved that award more, and in all honesty I'm furious that she lost.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I feel for them. I'm going for the 5th time this week, I love it so much. Every time I've brought someone different (bf, mom, coworker, friend) and they all loved it. When we leave the theater everyone around us just raves about it. The cast really puts their all into what looks like a sprinted marathon. The different style of each song, the creativity of the set and broadway magic, along with Andy's performance just captivates me. Love love love.

Well put. In the eleventh hour, I was truly hoping for a Come from Away Best Musical win, so my frustration with their winning Direction by no means reflects any personal dislike for the show. I seriously loved it. But this Chavkin loss...it just doesn't sit right with me at all.

I feel the exact same way! I've gone with completely different people who all LOVE it. The first time I went was during previews, and every single person stagedoored. No egos or hierarchy to it, just real people!

I've also seen Groundhog Day and am returning in two weeks. The show is funny, deep, and profound and Minchin's score is genius. Although Im not surprised it didn't win anything. Im just happy it was recognized with seven nominations in this crowded season and its doing great at the box office. I think it'll have a healthy 12-15 month run

I truly can't believe she lost. I was thrilled Rebecca Taichman won, but no one deserved a Tony more than Rachel.

Rachel Chavkin's loss also broke my heart. I really thought she was the biggest lock of all.
I maybe would have understood if she lost to DEH but to CFA?! I'm just at a loss.

I hope so too! I was jut told in the Tony thread that it is not doing well at the box office and they'll be lucky if it will last the summer? That doesn't sound right to me, but I haven't seen numbers to back up either side...

I concur with all the above. I'll be going back again this week as well. Actor was the only award I really thought they had chance for and I'm disappointed. Andy truly deserved it in my opinion. And yes, I saw DEH, and still think he gave a better performance than Ben.

I think all the school kids will be going to DEH.

I think they won't be considering DEH is sold OUT until December. Lol.

There arent tickets available this summer.
The only review of a show that matters is your own.
Even though I agree Hello, Dolly was the best revival of the season, the elitism leading up to the tonys made me truly hope it lost. And I never thought Bette deserved it. Dont get me wrong, I absolutely love her, but she was just playing herself and I found it distracting from the rest of the show.
Chavkin was absolutely robbed. Ashley's work, while very good, isn't anywhere near as incredible and innovative as Chavkin's. I truly do think that there was a split between Greif (who didn't deserve it) and Chavkin (who absolutely did deserve it) and Ashley was deemed the winner.
I'm also disappointed to see Malloy not win for his deeply layered score and orchestrations. I also love DEH, but TGC had the more original score.

There's standing room and cancellation (for those who can afford it). People were already camping out overnight.
And I'm thinking those who don't get tickets will go to Great Comet and, maybe, CFA.
Also, Hello, Dolly! was extremely disappointing. I love the show and DHP was great, but is that really the song that you want to have represent this show for years to come? Just really disappointing.
