They will not be doing "You Will Be Found."   They'll be doing "Waving..."

Good. Doing "You Will Be Found" without any context defeats the point of the show.

I think it's going to be a snippet of "Anybody Have A Map?" into Waving....

While they performed YWBF on the Today Show, the song loses some of its impact if you leave out the accompanying context.  I guess you could incorporate some of that into the Tony performance without really spoiling anything.  Though for me, the real impact of YWBF (and DEH in general) was the fact that I went in completely unspoiled, and was completely surprised (and overwhelmed) by the turn of events in YWBF.  Not sure that can be captured in a Tony performance with no buildup or context whatsoever.

I, for one, hope they do "You Will Be Found" as performed in the show - with the dialogue, social media, etc. It doesn't really matter that it's not in context - no Tony performance ever is. (As an example off the top of my head, She Loves Me did "Ilona" last year, with no reference to the fact that Kodaly is the "villain" and doesn't mean a word of what he's singing.) This happens literally all the time at the Tonys - it's about presenting a song that's entertaining to the viewing audience and that will make them buy tickets to the show, there's no need to spend time explaining the nuances of the plot.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did "Window," but I'm still hoping for "You Will Be Found" because I think it's the most compelling to the audience at large, it highlights the whole cast (while still featuring Platt) in a show that could easily take Best Musical and will likely run well past Platt's tenure, and frankly I'm a sucker for that vocal arranging. (I'm not a Tony ratings cynic and still think it's important to reach the "kid in the middle of nowhere who's sitting and living for Tony performances."Dear Evan Hansen Tony Performance

That would be my expectation as well.

"All we see is sky for forever
We let the world pass by for forever
Feels like we could go on for forever this way, this way

All we see is light for forever
'Cause the sun shines bright for forever
Like we'll be alright for forever this way
Two friends on a perfect day"

I was a teen half-a-century ago, a much more innocent time. No internet, no Watergate, no MTV or skateboards, much less skateboard videos on MTV. I was pretty sensitive and had plenty of sensitive friends, but I can't imagine any of them talking in the language of "For Forever".

You wanna hear about a "perfect day"? It rained several inches one afternoon (S. Fla.) and a bunch of us high school kids (not an athlete in the bunch) played football at the local junior high, sliding around and tackling one another in the mud for hours. (I don't mean that to sound erotic.) My best friends were among the players.

But as you said first... DEH is fiction.
"

So what I highlighted is the difference... you had friends.  Evan doesn't.  He desperately wants a connection with people, but he's so shy and anxious that he can't connect. He's not a typical kid.  He doesn't have friends that he makes silly videos or plays football in the rain with. He fell out of a tree and no one noticed and he really wanted someone to notice.  He's also obsessed with trees and worked in a park.  So when he makes up his perfect scenario, he and Connor are doing stuff that Evan likes/wants because it is his story.  His story also is built off of the conversation happening right before the song, plus he told them that Connor didn't want people to know they're friends (hence why they're the only two in Evan's story).  And Evan is told that his make believe Connor doesn't sound like actual Connor.

"

Beautifully put, thank you. I appreciate the additional info on the show.

I shouldn't have used the word "friends" in my post. It was more like "kids I knew casually from school." In my mind at the time, I was just as alone as EH. Probably wasn't, but that's how I felt. Of the group playing football, I only knew where on of them lived.

Nonetheless I never spent a day with anybody admiring scenery (not even in my imagination). High school boys have too much nervous energy.

Words Fail has the most emotional impact and is probably the best song in the show but there is no chance they perform it. If I hadn't seen the show and Platt got up there and sang that I would be super confused and the impact would be lost.

You Will Be Found makes the most sense, but I'm sure they'll do Waving, again.

I sobbed watching BEN PLATT perform "For Forever" on THE LATE SHOW... As much as I love MR. KARL there is no denying the power of that performance... It reminds me so much of being anxiety ridden in high school...

I think I have to admit that this is a stronger and more emotional performance than ANDY KARL's... and gulp deserves the TONY... I'm sobbing watching this number again...

I absolutely love For Forever, and the Colbert performance, but I don't think that it's the right choice for the Tony's. It was the right choice for Colbert, because they've done WTAW on all the late night shows now, but I don't think For Forever is as impactful out of context. The big, super moving moment in the song is when he describes Connor running to find him, no? But it's impactful because we already know that that didn't happen; Evan has already said that he was completely alone when it happened.

I don't think they should do Waving at the Tony's, either... I think they should do Disappear into YWBF.
