"That's How You Know" is all about the music. The chorus repeats a lot, with the music escalating and adding instruments each time. The verses are sparse. It takes you minutes to get to them.

That being said, without the big production aspect, it would have looked strange alone on stage. There's not enough imagery, right after the other and the music doesn't change quick enough as well. "Happy Working Song" has quick changes, both musically and image wise.

You have to feel for him

In addition to not winning with Wicked, he now has a 60/40 chance of an oscar & still winds up with nothing.

He is the Rodney Dangerfield of composers. He has his bundles of money to console him.

hahahaha schwartz leaving the tonys = classically hilarious!!! i almost died of laughter. what a diva ahahahaha (diva NOT in the fierce/amazing/fantastic sense, diva in the bad sense). or should i say baby, he is a baby ahaha
well, falling slowly deserved to win! just like the tonys - wicked did not even deserve to be nominated let alone win best score (thank god it didnt). enchanted was a good movie, but not best original song worthy.
wouldnt it have been amazing if sondheim was nominated for best original score for sweeney last night? he did have to change a few things from the musical, therefore it deserved to be nominated! hahahahahhaaha that would have been FANTASTIC hahahahahahaha

I happened to be on an elevator once with Schwartz when he mentioned the Tony loss to some friends in conversation. There was some bitterness, certainly. But it's still hard for me to picture him "storming out".

Yeah, I'm sure he storms his pay to the bank to deposit all the royalty checks from Wicked's world domination!! Avenue Q can't claim the worldwide business like Wicked so maybe that's his consolation prize. I'm Rich..B@TCH, lol!

"A little brains, a little talent...with the emphasis on the latter!"

May I just counter with:
Meadowlark
Corner of the Sky
the lyrics of Out There
the vamp (at least) of Magic To Do
the pianistic arrangement of All Good Gifts
the contrapuntal work (musically and lyrically) of the GODSPELL prologue

How do you know that this happened?

"Did Schwartz storm out of the Oscars after he lost?"

This was a question. I never said he stormed out of the Oscars.

Oh, yes, I realize it was a question. I'm just wondering why you would think that he would do that?

It would be like saying....Did Julie Christie storm out of the Oscars after she lost? Did Viggo Mortenson storm out of the Oscars after he lost?

As stated in my very first post

"Like he did at the TONYS when Avenue Q was clobbering WICKED?"

So I am basing my question on his previous history of doing such things.

there is a certain elfin quality about him...but I maintain the guy can write some melodic hooks and handle some lyrics...maybe a bit "twee" for some, but of great interest to others. GODSPELL has not survived and flourished on the strength of the improv'd book scenes....

and for pure musical theatre magic, try his "Since I Gave My Heart Away" from GEPPETTO....both the music and the lyrics. A quiet little masterpiece. He's at his best (IMHO) when writing about parents and children.

Schwartz has since apoligized for his behavior at the Tonys. I don't think he would mind as much about the Oscars - he's already won several times. I do think there's some anger about CONSTANTLY being snubbed by the Tonys.

I doubt there would be so much disdain for Schwartz had he not written the score to a Broadway blockbuster. Didn't hear many complaints about him before Wicked opened. As a matter of fact, I've seen numerous requests begging for a revival of Pippin. I find it interesting that the moment someone writes a score for a large-scale spectacle, which ends up becoming an international hit, they are instantly reviled and condemned as a hack.

While I'm not a fan of all his music, I do love many of his songs and recognize his talent as well as the fact that many of his songs have become classics in the canon of American musical theatre.

"certain elfen quality" The man is a troll. Back before he wrote a full show, he was acting as musical consultant for a show at the local professional theater. I was in the resident company, performing shows in the schools during the day and understudying the main stage shows at night. We would be in the middle of rehearsals for a show and he would come in and demand that we leave the rehearsal hall so he could use the piano. He was so obnoxious and would literally throw tantrams, that we usually gave in and would go outin the hall to rehearse.

So I can really picture him storming out of both the Tonys and Oscars.

And didn't he write Pippin while in college? I am trying to picture a troll-like college student who managed to terrorize a whole cast into leaving so he could use the piano.

according to some Q and A's, he had a version of PIPPIN (then titled something else) working while he was in college, but didn't finish it until later. The other underrated score of his is RAGS, which has some lovely stuff in it. It's kind of hard to picture a college that had such an arts program, yet no practice rooms with available pianos...still, I can recall how fast those practice rooms got booked by the "serious" musicians.

It was not a college, but a full time legitimate theater which did not have a lot of rehearsal spaces.

This was back in the early '70s and he was not that well known then.He was only a consultant and not the composer of the show.

Our group was not considered as important as the main stage shows so we were at a disadvantage when it came to demands from the main stage people.

No matter what anyone thinks this did happen.
