I actually used to follow Nicole Gelinas on Twitter until I couldn’t take it anymore. Be sure to check out who she works for."
Sorry Lizzie, Old cartoons and silent era movies had damsel tied to RR tracks only to have Canadian Mountie Dudley DoRight rescue her. Need Dudley in subway. Generational gap.
NYPD and MTA reported increase in crime. Pushing folks onto tracks and hoping someone helps you up before train comes. One lunatic did it in front of a cop.
It feels like no self-defense available in NYC and the flip side like the Floridian stand-your-ground law which gives you the legal right to shoot someone if you feel threatened. Imagine that in NYC. Daily News has become a daily obituary of shootings, slashings, subway crime.
I never hesitated to go to a night performance, but nervous now. Have the Stokes/Linc Ctr event. Won't attempt the subway.

I definitely watched Dudley Do-Right (note spelling) cartoons when I was a kid. I'm maybe older than you think; from the rest of your post, it seems like the weird connections you're making in your head are happening in more places than just cultural references.
"This thread reads like a series of White House memos." — Mister Matt
No Lizzie, pushing someone onto subway tracks made me wonder who would rescue these victims....ergo, the Dudley Do Rights who pulled fellow subway riders off tracks before being killed. Could've called them good seminarians, but how boring is that?
JBroadway.. I've bought many a meal and handed out alot of cash to needy on streets. I am well aware of the poverty situation. Hell, I grew up in it. I often go into city with fives and singles often giving $40-50+ in a night. I don't wait for a wheelchair bound person to ask. I just give some cash. I know the concept of "there but for the grace of God goes I."
And then we have the regulars who are clean, obviously fed. There are panhandlers who've said they make good money. Other scammers bitched I didn't give enough. I recognize the same folks in front of same 8th ave stores. Another group routinely hangs at 42nd and 8th.
The gun and subway crimes are out of control. The article addresses a real issue. Crime. A military grad and child were in crossfire in TS by lunatics fighting with each other. Other muggings. Security at Springsteen said to get ready to run "in case." The worthless mayor blew off the TS businesses as a political complaint.
So tell me highland guy, what is wrong with fear of rising crime that you make such a dumb accusation??
I guess you never lived in Florida where NRA gun worshippers will shoot anyone who looks at them the wrong way. Treyvon Martin was such a victim and his story inspired the Pass Over play.
One old guy shot a movie goer for using a cell phone during the movie and he got off. Blame the FL republicans that passed that BS law.
Then there is the other extreme. Bronx gangs and thugs routinely shooting anyone, drive by shootings, subway crime. So what does one use as self defense? I don't own or want a gun. You are vulnerable in both states.
I guess you can't distinguish or compare the sense of vulnerability. In Arizona and Texas, they legally walk around with assault rifles. Open carry. It's concealed carry in Fl, so it's handguns there. But if you carry a fishing pole to suggest yr going fishing or hunting, you can open carry a long gun. That is a real FL law. Republicans and NRA love it. Just hope some trigger happy fool doesn't kill you ala Trayvon who just went to convenience store for candy..
I don't trust the gun carriers anymore than the NYC thugs. Sorry if the concept escaped you but you've offered no self-defense solution. Uber is all I could think of.

Way to ignore details about crime statistics. Transit crime, year-to-date, has decreased by 27.3%. It has also decreased by 1.9% in the past 28 days. But it is true that it increased 26.3% last week over the same week last year: 24 reported crimes last week vs. 19 the same week last year.
regarding the Times piece, I previously noted that it does not appear that the author has any experience as a subway rider. I could say the same thing about JayElle. I could add that there is no indication that they have any meaningful experience above ground. Poor people begging are not unsafe, nor are they something new. Do you know how many people have been pushed onto the subway tracks? It is less than the number of people who have been hospitalized for breakthrough covid infections. What they have in common is that they are both unfortunate but extremely rare phenomenon. As everyone here who has day to day experience walking around the city and riding its subway have said, these articles do not reflect any reality; they are part of a political agenda. Oh, and where have you been witnessing these "Bronx gangs"? LOL Advice to JayElle: stay away; we don't need or want your kind here.

You would be wrong. I was stationed in Florida for six years in the United States Navy. My statement stands: There is something seriously wrong with you.

The damn police weren't there."
I have highlighted one of the OP's words. Doesn't mean what you think it means, OP. Thanks for the giggle.
