I actually think this is gonna be really good for in the heights. pushing it from summer release to around the holidays means it’ll be easier to build momentum for a big awards run

That's not a guarantee. Unless there's an available date in the fall that they can move it too, which there probably isn't otherwise they would have. Virtually every film has been taken off the release calendar.

Awards? Going by most stage to film adaptations, I'll go into this with extremely low expectations.

I actually think this is the though process. All the "major" movies of the season, the ones that either they expect to be blockbusters at the box office or award season highlights have all pushed out. The fact it got a push rather than a deathwish straight to streaming is a promising sign of their hopes for the film. A stage to scream musical... that seems like prime "just put it on digital" material.
Not to mention that all the studios are likely looking at shuffling their schedules based on where all the delayed movies end up. Let's say that things go somewhat back to normal by June. What is Disney put the delayed Mulan on that same week? People are not going to be going to see multi movies a week anymore for awhile with finances the way they will be for the average American and a moved movie like Mulan would kill ITH. This is a save move for them to pull it out and place it safely somewhere once all the movie release shuffling has settled.
Warner Bros. probably thought that a summer release would be perfect for this film. Pushing it into the fall or holiday season could be problematic as it will be a musical going up against Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY.
