Taping LB I thought was just an advertising scheme to let people non-musical fans know about the show and maybe get those in to Broadway.

You guys act like they're a bunch of guys sitting in an office going "We'll tape this but not this..." in relation to Broadway shows. Each show has it's own producer and own circumstances.

"Why did this not work for Legally Blonde? They were not doing very well, and with the help of the broadcast and the reality show they remained open for another year."

And they did not recoup.

Are you sure this wasn't for the whole Nicklodeon thing with the two little girls performing as Young Fiona and Teen Fiona?

"

Well, (though I'd question whether it actually helped or not I'm not sure)..if it did help, don't you think that losing say 1/4-or 1/2 an investment is better than the entire investment?

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Well, perhaps they are getting footage for a package on the whole experience? That's the only thing I can think it's for.

Leah and Marissa are gonna be on Nickelodeon?

Leah and Marissa have both left Shrek, as has the other Young Fiona, who joined Billy Elliot. Nickelodeon had a contest to find two girls, one to play Young Fiona and one for Teen Fiona for a performance.

Honestly, for some well known movies turned musicals (i.e., Legally Blonde and Shrek) broadcasting it on TV for a day or two really isn't a bad idea. It let's the folks (like me) who can't shell out $1500 on a weekend in NY, to see those shows. It then would make us want to buy tickets for the tour stop. I am pretty sure the MTV broadcast helped Legally Blonde's tour success.

Say what you say, filming Shrek and releasing it on DVD would be the smartest thing the producers could do. It would help the Broadway show, help the tour, and will sure help them recoup the Broadway investment (and make some money too).

LOL, some people's kids.

Maybe if they taped it and held out, like "Into The Woods". It was showed on TV until it closed a few years later in '91.

Also, due to the great response of movie theatres showing the final performance of "Rent", and some Opera and Ballet Companies, didn't some producers want to start filming shows and playing them in movie theatres? Shrek could be recorded for that purpose...

"Say what you say, filming Shrek and releasing it on DVD would be the smartest thing the producers could do. It would help the Broadway show, help the tour, and will sure help them recoup the Broadway investment (and make some money too).

Those that say Legally Blonde's airing did not help it, are not realizing that without the airing the tour would not have done as well as it's doing right now."

It wouldn't be the smartest thing producers could do. Taping the show and releasing it on DVD would be a huge waste of money. Do you know what kind of money goes into the show and how many DVDs they'd have to sell to even get close to recouping? Even MTV's airing of Legally Blonde wasn't released on DVD. Just because you throw some other product out there doesn't mean it will help the show recoup.

And who's to say it was the recording of the musical that actually helped the tour significantly? You're forgetting that before the tour launched, MTV aired the Legally Blonde reality show, and two of its contestants currently star in the tour. Not to mention viewers were constantly exposed to the show's songs week after week. So to say that if MTV did not the air the musical, the tour would not have done as well, is not necessarily true. The reality show gave it a boost.

Here's my thing. *I think this is a similar situation" If you like a band/performer and you have all their cds, then they happen to release a concert DVD and you buy it.. Is this gonna prevent you from going to see them when they come close? I reallllly don't think so. It makes no sense to believe that this wouldn't have SOME positive effect.

But then again, I don't believe people need Sondheim to be introduced to theatre *not to say that I don't adore him myself". In fact shows like Shrek are just what some people need to pull them in and then they will discover that there's more out there than most of the glitz and glamour that most shows are today.

anything you do let it come from you and it will be new.

It's a great way to introduce non-musical fans of the Movie to the show.

I'd imagine not, since they usually don't take 2 days to do it for the archives, right? Although, I wonder why their doing it in the middle of the week in October when they're likely to have a smaller crowd than on other days.

No idea. Just says "I was back at the show today.....alot of Rex Harrison style singing on my part....filming the show tomorrow and Tuesday.....just gonna get thru it...."

I'm assuming he's not feeling well. He didn't specify what it's being filmed for. I always thought they filmed for the archives at one performance, not two. Or did I just make that up?

I think a commercial release of this show would help it do better on Broadway. I also agree that the show was a downer, except for the sets which were AMAZING.

I bet if it is for commercial release, then they will have Chris dub his singing at a later date. All of their B-Roll is dubbed.

You would think, though, if they were filming for commercial release they'd publicize it ahead of time so that they would have a full crowd and all that. Doing it under the radar seems an odd choice to me.

I've known about them filming for a while. I have the Young Fiona schedule until January 24 and they are indeed filming until until the 20th.
