I hope this happens and it's a 'hit', if only because the non-success of the musical is perhaps the worst prediction the consensus of this forum has ever made. It's quite interesting.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Musicals that deserve movie adaptations over MEMPHIS (In Alphabetical Order):
Aida, American Idiot, Anything Goes (Remake with the 1989 Revial Script), Assassins, Avenue Q, Billy Elliot (a Musical Remake!), The Book of Mormon, Caroline or Change, Carousel (Remake with Hugh Jackman), Chess, Company, Follies, Grey Gardens, Hair (because the first movie was a bastardization), In The Heights, Into the Woods, Jesus Christ Superstar (a proper one), La Cage Aux Folles, The Last Five Years, Mack and Mabel, Matilda, Merrily We Roll Along, Miss Saigon, Next to Normal (!!!!!!!!!), Passing Strange, Pippin, Ragtime, Sessical (animated), Spring Awakening, Sunday in the Park With George, Sunset Boulevard, Taboo, tick tick...BOOM, Tommy (Based on the version that came to Broadway), Urinetown, Wicked, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
Nice list. It's a shame considering MEMPHIS has already been recorded/released on DVD too. But whatever.

The recorded MEMPHIS is available on Netflix if you have an account. I definitely think that WICKED and BOOK OF MORMON should get movies before this. Don't get me wrong, MEMPHIS was great, it's just not as worthy as WICKED or BOM. I think the WICKED movie would do very well. Many people who grew up knowing and loving the Wizard of Oz I'm sure would really love this, especially those dying to see it but can't afford the outragous ticket prices.
Theatre is my life. No one can take that away from me.
@johnnycantdecide so many of those shows you listed should NEVER be made into movies. (I.e. Hair, Spelling Bee, Avenue Q). So much would be lost if they aren't live.
I for one, think this could be fantastic if cast and directed well...
I hope J-Hud stays away from this show, she has ruined enough films!
