Is there any news? I keep waiting to hear if HERE LIES LOVE is going to reopen in a larger space for an open run. Does anyone know anything definitive?

Just spoke to a cast member last week, who is of the opinion there will be no transfer.

Well there aren't any theaters available right now anyway.

newintown... that saddens me. I was hoping that they'd find a ballroom space in the city, get a bar license and open for an extended or open-ended run. HERE LIES LOVE was by far one of the most fun shows of this past year. Not sure why The Public didn't feel the show had 'legs'. I get that reconfiguring a Broadway house was probably a bad idea, but there are several large spaces that could have accommodated this production. Too bad.

I didn't ask about that, sorry.

I feel like it can't be that costly. The Newman theater was reconfigured, and it's a pretty traditional space. I'd think they'd be able to find something that works. Maybe it's just lack of funding.

I mean Here Lies Love and Fun HOme were on so many Top 10 lists of 2013, yet neither of them are moving forward.

Fun Home is transferring next season.

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by chrisampm2 2013-12-19 02:17:14

RippedMan, Here Lies Love played LuEsther Hall, which has been a flexible space since at least the mid-70's, not the Newman which I don't think has ever been reconfigured from a traditional proscenium. It'd be a very costly proposition to remake a space that wasn't built for flexibility.

How are you so sure that FUN HOME is transferring next season?

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?

PlayItAgain also insisted that Honeymoon in Vegas was taking the Simon, so take that with a grain of salt.

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by Kad 2013-12-19 10:58:58

The Newman would be almost impossible to convert into anything other than proscenium without major renovations. That and the Anspacher are the Public's two inflexible performance spaces.

Pretty sure the show is going to be done at the Royal National Theatre in the UK this summer. It seems like a potentially good idea to let that happen first and use the reviews to help fuel the prestige value in a Broadway transfer.

MB-You mean "Here Lies Love"?

I think it would do very well in London.

It was going to transfer to Hotel Pennsylvania but ran into some problems. They are planning a Spring 2014 transfer.

A lot can change in two months. The spring is coming up rather quickly.

And the article just conjectures it'll wait until the spring due to Timbers' schedule. No official source actually said it.

I'm still confused-which show do we think is going to London? (Here Lies Love could actually do really well there.)

'Fun Home' can be done at the National Theatre, not sure 'Here Lies Love' would fit in there, unless they are going to do it in the theatre they are rebuilding at the moment, before they put the seats in.

Here Lies Love is rumored for the RNT Dorfman Theatre in July.

Wouldn't Fun Home come to Broadway before London? Yes, the article about Here Lies Love didn't confirm it, but hopefully they are still trying to make it work.

Saw, Fun Home, last night, so I was at the Public Theatre. I asked about the transfer of both, Fun Home, and Here Lies Love. I was told that Fun Home was slated for Broadway and that Here Lies Love was going to be revived back at The Public in LuEsther Hall next season. That they were working out the issues with Equity now and that it would be announced soon. Not sure how accurate this is as often the usher at The Public are only informed by rumors, but those rumors are internal. Interesting.

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by RippedMan 2014-01-05 15:33:11

Probably smart to delay Fun Home until next season. This season is already packed with new musicals, and most of which have opened to glowing reviews, making the Best Musical Tony even harder to figure out.

Did someone just suggest ushers know what's going on?
That's so funny!

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by bobs3 2014-01-05 18:41:28

They probably couldn't raise the money. After the very expensive flop of the ON THE TOWN revival (which was 100% financed by the NYSF) and to a lesser extent THE WILD PARTY (the NYSF had co-producers on that show), they prefer to let commercial producers come in and put up the financing for Broadway transfers.

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by RUkiddingme 2014-01-06 17:29:22

BOBS - this isn't meant towards you - it's a general complaint I have that too many people do,

When talking about the Public, mentioning the 13 years ago Wild Party transfer is very lazy. Mentioning anything before that is ludicrous.

Since then, the Public has transferred almost a dozen shows. Some successful, some not. Some hits, some not. Just like every other theaters/producers track record.

If some rich producers want to put their money into Here Lies Love, it will transfer.
If some rich producers want to put their money into Fun Home, it will transfer.

When Hair was a hit on Broadway a few years back does anyone thing ticket buyers gave a **** about On The Town?

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?

I don't think the Public would be willing (they may be unable) to run two open-ended shows under their auspices.

It seems that the usher who told me that HERE LIES LOVE was going to reopen at The Public was correct. If you read back a few posts, you'll see that I reported a conversation with an usher who said as much.

It is back at the LuEsther theater, but it's not a production of the Public. The Public is renting out the space to a commercial producer. Thus, it's not a given that members will receive discounts.

Anyone have an idea when they will begin selling the next block of tickets? Coming into town the week of the June 23rd and, so far, tickets are only on sale through June 21st. Any idea on if they will be releasing dates in blocks or gradually, week by week (I notice they have 10 weeks on sale, currently, and I'm wondering if they are only selling 10 weeks in advance at all times). I just want to make sure I am on top of when they are released!

And, I agree, I am loving all the new artwork.

GilmoreGirlO2... I believe they are going to sell this like they sell, Sleep No More - their other production. Blocks of tickets will go on sale every week, or so. The theory is this keeps people from being complacent about purchasing tickets. I am very hopeful that the show will run for quite a long time though, and so I'd just keep checking and soon you'll see tickets available for when you're in the town.

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?

I think the prices are much higher. The NY Times says $90.50 was the top price during the original run. I think $139 is the most expensive ticket (by far) in Off-Broadway history for non-premium.

Since all the tickets are the same price, I believe Here Lies Love may be the show that you have to pay the most money to get in, ever, except for Book of Mormon. Book of Mormon apparently went to $155 for the last row of the mezzanine at some point. That is INSANE.

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by Play Esq. 2014-03-08 16:07:40

The show is incredible, but I doubt I'll see it again more than once or twice at these prices. Not to play the "price-per-minute" game, but for a 90 minute show you're paying a buck fifty a minute. I adore this show and would certainly pay those prices to see it again -- but would many? It'll be interesting to see if discounts are offered...I expect (and hope) so.

In either event, I can't wait for the cast album to come out; i've practically worn out the concept album!

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by luvcaroline 2014-03-17 17:07:04

For those who have seen this, will we lose much of the "experience" if we sit in the balcony? If we decide on floor "seats," how crowded is the floor and how much moving around is involved during the show? We are thinking about doing a 5:00 P.M. show so that we can maximize the number of other shows that we can see during our next visit to NYC. If we do that, will we easily be able to make an 8:00 P.M. Broadway show?

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by macnyc 2014-03-17 17:16:07

I don't know what you mean by floor seats. The only person sitting on the main stage floor was someone in a wheelchair. Everyone else in seats was upstairs.

To answer the first part of your question, yes, I think you would miss some of the fun of the show if you were to sit in the balcony. It is tiring, though, to stand and dance and move for that long. I was pooped by the end of it. As far as how much moving you'll have to do, if the staging has remained the same, the ushers will move you from time to time as set pieces have to be opened or reconfigured. It's hard to say "how much" that constitutes.

As far as seeing a Broadway show at 8, I don't remember how long Here Lies Love runs. Assuming it's 90 minutes, you SHOULD have enough time, but if for some reason the N or R trains aren't running that day, it will be harder to get up to the theater district.

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by ARTc3 2014-03-17 17:21:15

luvcaroline, IMHO, yes. You will lose a lot of the experience sitting upstairs and not standing/dancing downstairs with most of the audience. This show is all about the "experience", so unless you have reason to not want - or be able - to stand for the required 90 minutes, definitely opt for the floor. It is crowded on the floor. Not painfully so, but you will standing with a crowd not that dissimilar to a dance floor at a popular club. The stage moves often and with it the audience, so you'll be moving a lot and even learn and be asked to dance a line dance.

As for time... The show runs only about 80 minutes, but exiting The Public, perhaps getting anything checked, etc. figure another 20 or so minutes. So, it is possible to catch an 8p show uptown.

I will say that I often like to have some time to take a show in and process the experience. This was especially true with HERE LIES LOVE. I live here and so I'm not in a rush to see as much as I can in a few days, so take that into consideration, too.

Anyway, enjoy the show, it is really a lot of fun. And, welcome to New York. Have a great stay!

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by Wildcard 2014-03-17 17:28:28

The show is best experienced when in the floor area. You are part of the action. However, you will not miss anything if you were in the balcony. Occasionally, some of the action occurs underneath you. However, if you don't mind leaning forward during those moments, you will still be able to see what's going on.

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by luvcaroline 2014-03-17 18:52:58

Thank you for the prompt replies! My partner has limited vision in dim lighting, and so we were just wondering how much moving around we would have to do and if that would impede our enjoyment of the show. I think that we might take a chance and try the floor. I know what you mean about taking in so many shows, Artc3. However, this is going to be a shorter trip for us (4 nights), and there's a lot that we want to see. We already have Cabaret and Rocky tickets, and thinking about adding If/Then and possibly Hedwig.

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?
Posted by choitoy 2014-03-17 20:00:12

My sister and I saw "Here Lies Love" last year from the balcony and we were just fine. Yes, it would be more fun to be immersed in the show by doing the floor, but you won't miss too much by being above the action. An it's kinda fun watching the audience too and seeing how everyone gets herded around.

As to the 5:00 show, yes there is plenty of time to go back uptown after the show, and even grab a quick bite to eat. After we saw the show, we grabbed a quick bite (from McDonald's, but there should be time for another place) and them we caught the evening show for "The Nance".

Theoretically, if one plans it right, it would be possible to see four shows on the Saturday. A shorter show (under two hours, but if you time it right, you can see a full 2.5 hour show) matinee, then head down to the Public to see the 5:00 show of "Here Lies Love", then come back uptown to see a 90 minute show like "After Midnight" at 8:00, and then you have about 25 minutes or show to run over to see "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" at 10:00. It's crazy, but do-able I think (well, at least my sister and I are going to try that when we come again in June.)

Posted by pathman2 2014-03-18 10:15:55

The show just needs a little bit of polishing up. Maybe have nicer platforms (the old ones looked very much like plywood). More disco lights on the stage floor would be good. Glitz it up!

I'm more concerned about how the commercial audience would take to this. First the location is too far off Times Square, second, I can imagine the tourists complaining of having to stand the duration of the show.

HERE LIES LOVE transfer?

I think there is an audience for HERE LIES LOVE. After all, Sleep No More (same producers), is far from Times Square, and not only do you stand, you climb lots and lots and lots of steps.

If there is a decent marketing campaign, combined with word of mouth, HERE LIES LOVE, will actually bring new audiences to The Public. I think this is going to be a win win all around.

I agree Art, I think there is a big audience for it. I still think the ticket prices are a bit steep, though.

"First the location is too far off Times Square, second, I can imagine the tourists complaining of having to stand the duration of the show."

The same reasons Fuerza Bruta only lasted years and years...

@PlayItAgain: You seem awfully confident about a lot of things that aren't true...

^ and I'm planning on taking advantage of that very offer. My sister loves to dance and she loves theater. And, most importantly, her birthday is coming up. I think I just decided what we're doing!

The production will be staged this summer as a co-production wtih Seattle Rep and American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Not sure if Ricamora will join the cast of that production.

If they can make Natasha fit, I don't see why not?
