Grease is a 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. The musical is named for the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as the greasers. The musical, set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School (loosely based on William Howard Taft School), follows ten working-class teenagers as they navigate the complexities of love, cars, and drive-ins.
STAGE TUBE: On This Day 8/18- MY FAIR LADYAugust 18, 2012Today in 1981, the second Broadway revival of My Fair Lady opened at the Uris Theatre (now the George Gershwin Theatre), where it ran for 120 performances. My Fair Lady is a musical based upon George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion and with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a well born lady. The musical's 1956 Broadway production was a hit, setting what was then the record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. It was followed by a hit London production, a popular film version, and numerous revivals.
STAGE TUBE: On This Day 8/17- A CHORUS LINEAugust 17, 2012Today in 2008, the first Broadway revival of A Chrous Line closed at the Schoenfeld Theatre, where it ran for 759 performances. A Chorus Line is a musical about Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line. The book was authored by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante, lyrics were written by Edward Kleban, and music was composed by Marvin Hamlisch. With nineteen main characters, it is set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre during an audition for a musical. The show provides a glimpse into the personalities of the performers and the choreographer as they describe the events that have shaped their lives and their decisions to become dancers. The original Broadway production received 12 Tony Award nominations and winning nine of them, in addition to the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters to Be Honored with Ride of Fame, 8/21August 17, 2012Gray Line New York, New York City's premiere double-decker bus and motorcoach tourism company, has announced today that Television and Broadway icons Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters, as well as co-founders of Broadway Barks, an organization whose mission is to help shelter animals find permanent homes in NYC, produced by Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS, will be inducted into the Ride of Fame. A ribbon-cutting ceremony where a custom decal will be unveiled on the front of the vehicle displaying their likenesses, also incorporating a special edition poster designed by the legendary Bob Mackie, for this year's 14th annual Broadway Barks, a star-studded dog and cat adoption event, which the two actresses recently co-hosted. Ms. Peters will be on hand for the unveiling on Tuesday, August 21st, 12 noon on PIer 78 at 455 12th Avenue at 38th Street.

James Conlon to Lead Chicago Symphony Orchestra Concert, 8/20August 16, 2012The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the crown jewel of Ravinia's summer classical programming, closes out their Ravinia summer residency in a concert led by Ravinia Music Director James Conlon in the Martin Theatre at 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20. Metropolitan Museum of Art to Feature EXTRAVAGENT INVENTIONS, 10/30-1/27August 16, 2012Extravagant Inventions: The Princely Furniture of the Roentgens, on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art October 30, 2012, through January 27, 2013, will be the first comprehensive survey of the Roentgen family's cabinetmaking firm from 1742 to its closing in the early 1800s. Some 60 pieces of furniture, many of which have never before been lent outside Europe, and several clocks will be complemented by paintings, including portraits of the Roentgen family, and prints that depict the masterpieces of furniture in contemporary interiors.
