By the late 19th century, the American food supply was rife with frauds, fakes, and legions of untested and often deadly chemicals that threatened the health of consumers. The Poison Squad, based on the acclaimed book by Deborah Blum, tells the story of a little known government chemist named Dr. Harvey Wiley, who, determined to banish these dangerous substances from the American diet, took on the powerful food manufacturers and their allies in government. To demonstrate the peril lurking in these ubiquitous chemicals — from copper sulfate to borax to formaldehyde — Wiley embarked upon a series of bold and controversial trials on human subjects — a dozen brave young men who would become known as the “Poison Squad.” Following Wiley's unusual experiments and tireless crusade for food safety, the film charts the path of the forgotten man whose work would become the basis for our consumer protection laws, and ultimately the creation of the FDA. The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) Honors announced today the recipients of two of their most prominent awards - Hollywood Legacy Award and Industry Renaissance Award - which each honor outstanding accomplishments in film and television. Academy AwardⓇ winner Louis Gossett, Jr. (“Watchmen,” “An Officer and a Gentleman”) will be honored with the Hollywood Legacy Award for his contributions to the entertainment industry. The Hollywood Legacy Award honors a legendary artist whose trailblazing work has inspired generations and made an enduring contribution to film and television. Additionally, EmmyⓇ Award-winning producer, writer, and actor, Lena Waithe (“The Chi,” “Boomerang,” “Queen & Slim”) will receive the prestigious Industry Renaissance Award, which recognizes content creators whose exemplary work in film and television contributes to changing perceptions of people of color in the entertainment industry. 

Ugly Runner is a 3-piece rock 'n' roll outfit from Asheville, North Carolina. As broad as the spectrum of rock 'n' roll itself, so are the influences of Ugly Runner, which range from California Punk to British Rhythm & Blues. Aiming to create timeless rock 'n' roll that dances on the edge of psychedelia, and invokes nostalgia from the first listen, the band entered the studio in May 2019 to record their debut EP, “Romanticizer,” at Sedgwick Studios in Flat Rock, NC. Working with engineer, Peter Brownlee, they tracked the 6-song EP and spent the remainder of the summer playing shows and preparing for the release of their debut EP. Ugly Runner's “Romanticizer” will be released on Cleopatra Records on January 2nd. 

Sy Somebody is back and has teamed up with Maceo Vidal-Haymes of the O'My's for new single, Idle Minds, ahead of his forthcoming album. Frontman Casey Meehan says the song, “details the mistakes of a young man, paralleled by the mistakes of a society soaked in boredom”. Despite the thematic focus on boredom the song is uptempo with a danceable finish while still retaining the power chords and rock footing that was established through breakout singles, “Take The Money '' and “Zookeeper”. Three songs in, Sy Somebody is finding definition as a multifaceted project influenced by countless sources but with a clear sound and opinion. Freshman album Life Is Cruel, Let's Be Friends…  was created alongside the band of Father John Misty with an all star lineup of musicians and collaborators. It's set to be released on January 31 with a show in Chicago to follow.

Today, NYC-based project youbet release “Volcano,” the final single from their debut Compare & Despair, out January 31st. The most dynamic and lush offering from the record, it's full of warbling guitars, synths, drum machines and samples, as songwriter Nick Llobet croons “Blame it on me, you're a volcano / contact with you, is it everything that I want to assume?”

Los Angeles/Brooklyn based vocalist, composer, and recording artist Sondra Sun-Odeon has announced a winter tour in support of her sophomore album Desyre out now via Graveface Records (order). The album features Mary Lattimore, Thor Harris (SWANS), Lia Simone Braswell (A Place to Bury Strangers) and J.R. AMC announced today a marathon of the Emmy® Award-winning drama Breaking Bad in January and February, leading into the world television premiere of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie on Sunday, February 16 at 8:00 p.m. ET/7c.  The marathon, featuring all episodes from all five critically acclaimed seasons of the series kicks off Sunday, January 19 at 4:00 p.m. ET/3c and airs over five consecutive Sundays. The Breaking Bad programming event will usher in the previously announced premiere of Better Call Saul's highly anticipated fifth season on Sunday, February 23 at 10:00 p.m. ET/9c. Breaking Bad, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie and Better Call Saul are produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Artist and songwriter Peter Voss-Knude has released the second single, 'Alchemy Expression' off of his upcoming LP, The Anti-Terror Album. The single was premiered with American Songwriter praising not only 'Alchemy Expression' but praising the entire LP, 'Throughout Anti-Terror, he somehow makes palatable the heaviness of lyrics drifting from school shootings, racism, nuclear warfare, hatred and fear mongering, and says once people listen to the album, they will be less “terrorized,” in a sense.'
