Just last night, the cast and creative team of the Tony Award-winning Best Musical Kinky Boots celebrated the show's one year anniversary with a celebratory curtain call and cake. With a Tony Award-winning score by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, a book by four-time Tony Award-winnerHarvey Fierstein, and direction and choreography by two-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell, Kinky Boots opened on April 4, 2013 and continues to play to standing-room-only crowds nightly. The show, which has broken all box office records at the Hirshfeld Theatre, recouped its costs in October 2013, after just 30 weeks on Broadway. MCC Theater's annual Miscast gala, one of the most exciting and unique theater events in town, was held last night at the Hammerstein Ballroom. At the event, Broadway's hottest stars performed songs from roles in which they would never be cast. This year's event was hosted by award-winning actress Allison Janney. Following Transport Group's 2011 production of Queen of the Mist, our 20th Century Project continues into its second decade (1910 - 1920) with an urgent new revival of John Van Druten's beloved classic, I Remember Mama, directed by Jack Cummings III. Since bursting onto Broadway, Newsies has set and broken seven Nederlander Theatre house records on its way to becoming the highest-grossing show of the 2011-12 Broadway season. The show received 23 major theatrical nominations - including eight Tony Award nods - and won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Score and Choreography. Just last night, Columbia University, Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith and Tony Kushner honored the winners of the 2014 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History with a program and reception at Columbia University. The winner of the 2014 Kennedy Prize is Dominique Morisseau for Detroit '67. Morisseau received a cash award of $100,000. The event honoring her work featured remarks by Carlos Alonso, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; Tony Kushner, Edward M. At a press conference yesterday, March 5, the cast of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder announced that the production has reached the 1,000th death of its leading man, Jefferson Mays. Mays' character dies eight times in each performance; and so, he has reached 1,000 stage deaths faster than any other Broadway actor. It was at yesterday's press conference that he was a awarded an honorary 'death certificate.'
