BWW Review: Recommended Viewing (and reading): THE BOOK OF WILL Delights at Austin Playhouse
by Madelyn Geyer - June 17, 2019
You can't write about a work of Shakespeare or about a work about Shakespeare without quoting one of his most famous (and theatrically appropriate) lines: "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players." But on the stage of the Austin Playhouse, the men and women aren't merely players. They are the driving force behind bringing THE BOOK OF WILL to life with vivacious enthusiasm and well-honed skill.

BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS at EmilyAnn Theatre
by Addison McKissack - June 13, 2019
INTO THE WOODS has always been one of my favorite musicals, I take any chance that I can to see it. So I was extremely excited to be able to see The EmilyAnn Theatre's production of the Sondheim classic, quite literally in the woods. In short, this is a very earnest production. It was done well despite some technical issues on the sound side.
BWW Review: OEDIPUS THE TYRANT at Fox Den Theatre Company
by Amanda England - June 13, 2019
A sickness is spreading in Thebes. King Oedipus (KC Ryan) is so certain of their own claim to the throne that they don't ask questions when those who do not support them are rounded up and locked away due to 'illness'. (Take note of the singular 'they' here - this inclusive pronoun is used throughout the show.) Meanwhile, elections are taking place in Thebes and someone has betrayed the royal family - but whom?

BWW Review: DRY LAND at Capital T Theatre
by Jesse Griffith - June 10, 2019
Amy is a pregnant teen with no one to help her. She has a BFF (Reba), and yet she seeks help from high school swim team newcomer, Ester. Amy is too scared to trust anyone else, least of all an adult, and asks Ester to help her self-abort the pregnancy. A precarious situation, does Ester help Amy with such high stakes? It's a controversial topic to say the least and all politics and viewpoints aside, it's an all-too-common predicament in twenty-first century America.
BWW Review: The City Theatre's PARALLEL LIVES Overstays Its Welcome
by Madelyn Geyer - June 10, 2019
The City Theatre's production of PARALLEL LIVES eschews elaborate sets, costumes, and production design in favor of highlighting its varied characters and the stories they bring to life. Sadly, the show suffers from a lack of dynamic entertainment value and holds a run time that will have you checking your watch surprised that it's not over yet.

BWW Review: HAMILTON Dazzles at Bass Concert Hall
by Frank Benge - May 31, 2019
There are a handful of musicals whose debuts changed the face of what musical theatre could be: Oklahoma, Company, West Side Story, Hair, A Chorus Line and now you can add to that list HAMILTON: AN AMERICAN MUSICAL. HAMILTON is an international sensation that appeared on Broadway in 2015 and is sung and rapped through with scant traditional dialogue. Inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by historian Ron Chernow about the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, it features music, lyrics and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The show incorporates hip hop, R&B, pop, soul, traditional-style show tunes, and color-conscious casting of non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures. In 2016, HAMILTON received a record 16 Tony nominations, winning 11, including Best Musical, and was also the recipient of the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The prior Off-Broadway production won the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical as well as seven other Drama Desk Awards.
