When the tour returns to the Fabulous Fox Theatre January 15 - 20 after a highly successful visit in 2011, Atlanta audiences will have another chance to experience the Blue phenomenon. The "Blue Men" are usually men of few (or more accurately, no) words, but I got one of them, Russell Rinker, a veteran Blue Man, to speak long enough to tell me a little about himself, this exciting new production and why audiences of all ages are in for a real treat.
Alliance Theatre Receives Grant from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a grant to the Alliance Theatre to create a three-year Playwright In Residence staff position. Designed to advance the role of playwrights in American theatre, the goals of the residencies include providing playwrights with space, time and resources; and positively influencing the working environment of theatres by embedding playwrights on their staffs.

Widely regarded as one of the most talented virtuoso pianists performing today, Yefim Bronfman performs at Emory's Schwartz Center for Performing Arts on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 8 p.m. In this solo recital, Bronfman will perform Arabeske in C Major, op. 18 by Robert Schumann; Sonata No. 3 in F Minor, op. 5 by Johannes Brahms; Sergey Prokofiev's Sonata No. 8 in B-flat Major, op. 84; and Sisar (New Work) by Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Oscar and Tony Award-winning composer Alan Menken, director Jeff Calhoun and producer Thomas Schumacher will join Kara Lindsay, Andrew Keenan-Bolger and Mike Faist, stars of the Tony award-winning Broadway musical, Newsies, for a special presentation to 4,000 students and teachers representing 82 groups from 23 states at the 2013 Junior Theater Festival, it was announced today by Theater of the Stars President Nick Manos and Timothy Allen McDonald, founding Chairman of iTheatrics. The Junior Theater Festival is being held January 18, 19 and 20 at the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta.

The deadline approaches for submission to second annual edition of The Atlanta Fringe Festival,running June 5-9, 2013, at locations throughout downtown and East Atlanta. Artists interested in participating in the Fringe Festival or Fringe Radio have until Tuesday, January 15 to send in their proposals via the AFF website:www.atlantafringe.org. Applications for the Fringe Festival are $25, with productions selected randomly via lottery. Applications for Fringe Radio are $15, with 25 slots available on a first come, first served basis.

Music Director Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will perform its annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at 8:00 p.m., in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center. The concert will feature two world premieres: a new work by jazz pianist Marcus Roberts; and Everything Lasts Forever by composer and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra bassist Michael Kurth.

The Alliance Theatre, in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), presents a free reading of Dear Dr. King, an original script written by Pearl Cleage in collaboration with high school Collision Project students. Created out of the Alliance Theatre Collision Project and inspired by the classic film It's a Wonderful Life, this provocative piece uses the unique voice of teenagers to explore issues of legacy and the power that each individual life can play in effecting social change. The performances are part of the ADL's annual No Place For Hate Summit, which will take place on Monday, January 21, 2013.

BIKE AMERICA, the ninth competition winner, will premiere on the Hertz Stage February 1 - 24, 2013. Opening night is February 6, 2013. BIKE AMERICA is written by Mike Lew from the Juilliard Drama Division and will be directed by Mortiz von Stuelpnagel.
