Sierra is making her Broadway debut as an alternate in Six.
We all know how much hard work goes into the performances that audiences see eight times a week on Broadway. When they're not giving it their all onstage, most performers are backstage doing what it takes to stay happy, healthy, and ready to go between scenes. In Words From The Wings, BroadwayWorld is taking fans behind the curtain to shine a spotlight on the everyday routines that keep Broadway stars moving.
In this edition, we catch up with Sierra Fermin, currently appearing in Six on Broadway. Below, she takes us backstage at the Lena Horne Theatre (with photos by Jennifer Broski) to share some of her favorite backstage moments, must-haves, routines, and more!
What’s the first thing you do when you arrive to the theatre?
After saying hi to our doormen and signing in, I head to my dressing room and connect to my speaker to play music. I also like to be comfy when I do hair/makeup so I typically change into sweatpants and a sweatshirt.
What’s the last thing you do before you go on stage?
I brush my teeth, sip some water, and say a mini prayer before leaving the dressing room.
What’s your must-have backstage snack?
Ooo, this is weird but I always have saltines. Other than that, I like to switch out the snacks I keep in my dressing room. Right now I’m loving Trader Joe’s candied pecans.
Pre-show ritual that others may think is weird?
Our pre-show ritual isn’t really weird— it has also changed from cast to cast. With Broadway 4.0, we start off by holding hands and taking deep breaths together. Then, we start passing a squeeze around the circle and when someone feels ready they say “1”. We start counting off individually until everyone has said a number and we get to “6”. It’s different every night, which I think is a great way to help us feel grounded and connected to one another.
What are five must-haves in your dressing room?
(That was technically eight things. A girl has needs)
What’s your favorite moment from the show to watch from the wings?
We don’t typically have much time offstage (which is one of the many cool things about our show ;))! Most of the time, if we’re in the wings it’s for less than a minute and we’re getting a quick sip of water, wiping sweat, adjusting/putting on costumes, or just taking a moment to breathe. However, when I’m not on I love watching “No Way”. It’s such a genius song and the perfect way to kick off our show.
What has been your favorite backstage moment in your time with this show so far?
Oh goodness, naming just one is impossible. Everyone at the Lena Horne is so wonderful, and we’ve made a lot of great memories. I suppose one of my favorite and most recent backstage moments was when our Sound Department hosted a “Hot Ones” hot sauce challenge party in between shows. It was intense, awesome, and exactly what it sounds like. I’ll take any chance I get to be festive, so getting to enjoy everyone’s company outside of the show has been a major highlight of my time here.
