Red is a dazzling and richly entertaining musical revue which celebrates the flame-haired icons who have shaped stage and screen history, whilst simultaneously showcasing the extraordinary talents of its creator and performer, Amber Topaz. Stylish, intelligent and brimming with affection for its subjects, this is far more than a cabaret showcase. It is a lovingly crafted theatrical celebration of female performers whose influence continues to resonate across generations.
The production immediately establishes its glamorous world. The stage is adorned with a sumptuous red velvet curtain whilst a sleek coat stand displays a striking red feather boa and robe. Perched atop the piano sits a bowler hat, quietly hinting at the theatrical treasures to come. It is elegant, understated and steeped in old Hollywood allure.
From the moment Amber Topaz appears, she commands attention with effortless charisma. Introducing audiences to a host of celebrated redheads from musical theatre, film and popular culture including Ginger Rogers, Jessica Rabbit, Jessie from Toy Story, Nicole Kidman, Lucille Ball, Rita Hayworth, Princess Fiona from Shrek, Susan Sarandon and Shirley MacLaine, Red quickly reveals itself as an affectionate exploration of artistic legacy.
Red is no ordinary musical revue. It is a history lesson wrapped in Hollywood glamour and musical joy.

Topaz guides audiences through the lives and careers of these remarkable women with warmth, humour and genuine admiration. Stories of Rita Hayworth’s iconic hair flick in Gilda, Lucille Ball’s legendary facial comedy and the charmingly naïve screen personas of Shirley MacLaine and Shirley Temple are woven seamlessly into the evening. Particularly moving is the attention given to Gwen Verdon, whose three Tony Awards and enduring partnership with Bob Fosse are explored with evident passion and respect.
Topaz herself proves a consummate triple threat performer. Proudly embracing her identity as a "Yorkshire lass", she balances powerhouse vocals, comic precision and engaging storytelling with an incredibly likeable presence. The result is a performer whose own tenacity mirrors many of the women she celebrates.
The revue cleverly moves between tribute and social reflection, highlighting not only iconic performers, but the determination and ambition of women who forged international careers. There is playful comedy in her portrayal of characters such as Miss Hannigan from Annie, whilst musical moments provide emotional depth and theatrical resonance.
One particularly compelling section reflects on Emma Stone and her commitment to Sally Bowles in Cabaret, leading into a stirring rendition of 'Maybe This Time'. It serves as a reminder of how transformative performance can be and how artistic risks shape careers.
Several moments stand out as exceptional. A hilarious piano sequence demonstrates Topaz’s comedic flair and emotional connection to the material. Her Moulin Rouge! inspired medley of Nicole Kidman's Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend is glamorous and vocally assured, whilst her mesmerising embodiment of Jessica Rabbit delivers one of the evening’s finest moments. Her rendition of 'Why Don’t You Do Right?' captures the seductive mystery of the character whilst cleverly acknowledging Jessica Rabbit’s inspirations in Lauren Bacall and Rita Hayworth.

Equally memorable is Topaz’s performance of Bette Midler’s version of 'Everything’s Coming Up Roses'. Describing Midler as a consummate performer, Topaz delivers the number with theatrical confidence and emotional strength.
Her admiration for Bernadette Peters is also deeply felt. Describing Peters as the embodiment of Broadway stardom, Topaz reflects on visits to Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends, creating a thoughtful connection between contemporary theatre and the legends who inspired it. The show concludes with two lesser known songs which only enrich the experience further, moving the audience from familiarity to discovery and exploration.
Perhaps the production’s most uplifting message is its reminder that many celebrated performers found their success later in life, proving that dreams have no expiry date and artistry can flourish at any age.
Amber Topaz has created something genuinely special with Red. It is glamorous, educational, heartfelt and wonderfully entertaining. This multitalented showgirl has crafted a dynamic celebration of theatrical history that honours the sirens who came before, whilst firmly establishing her own place amongst them.
