HAMILTON's Popularity Increases Tourism At The Founding Father's Gravesite
"I used to say, 'You might recognize him from the ten-dollar bill,'" says Trinity Church archivist and tour guide Anne Petrimoulx. "Now I say, 'You might know him from the musical.'"
Alexander Hamilton has been buried inside the church's gated courtyard on Broadway in Lower Manhattan since shortly after coming out on the short end of his 1804 duel with Aaron Burr. Long regarded as one of the quintessential New Yorkers, the gravesite bearing his name has always been the main attraction among the weatherworn headstones, some dating from the 1680s. But the success of Lin-Manuel Miranda's smash hit musical has elevated that patch of ground to Broadway star status.
The New York Times reports that he may never have had the volume of visitors he's had in the last six months.
Petrimoulx has seen a great increase in the number of young people at her tours, curious not only about Alexander Hamilton but also about other characters from the show who are buried at Trinity Church.
"I got a question about Hercules Mulligan a few months ago," she said. "No one had ever asked about Hercules Mulligan before."

A while back. I was in an audience of theatre fans watching an onstage conversation between Frank Rich and Stephen Sondheim and the subject of unauthorized changes made in regional and amateur productions came up. Like many theatre fans, I'd been reading the raves she's been getting as Beanie Feldstein's standby, and since I doubted press would be offered comps during her run, I sprung for a ticket to see for myself.
