From the Artistic Director: Suicide, Incorporated
Posted by Todd Haimes - October 14th, 2011

This is indeed a play that tackles the issue of suicide, but I want you to know two important things about it: The play doesn't take this difficult subject matter lightly, and it also allows for a new way into this issue that isn't all gloom and doom.

I think it's essential that you know both of these things before walking into the theatre. After all, the very word "suicide" inevitably conjures up many emotions. Whether you have a personal connection to the issue or not, the weight carried by the very concept of taking your own life is hard to ignore, and it would be irresponsible to put something on stage that doesn't acknowledge that fact. What I love about Suicide, Incorporated is that the playwright, Andrew Hinderaker, has managed to put a new twist on the subject by coming up with the provocative idea of a company that helps clients write the perfect suicide note. The concept is so heightened that it allows for moments of lightness, and it also gives a new context to the issue so we are able to see it from a different perspective.

But putting suicide in a new light shouldn't be interpreted as an attempt to lecture on it. Hopefully, you will take away new insight from this production, particularly about suicide among young men, but there's an essential difference between a theatre and a pulpit. The play will explore the emotions of those who consider suicide and those who are left behind when someone they love takes this action, but it is here to take you on a dramatic journey with the characters, not to instruct.

I do think you'll find yourself talking as you leave the play, and it's wonderful that the show has such an impact. If you do feel like you want to know more, we have plenty to share with you. There is information available in your program, in the theatre's lobby, and on our website. You can explore as much or as little of this additional information as you like.

Having said all of this, you should know that Suicide, Incorporated is also full of surprises. Yes, it tackles a serious issue that could easily become maudlin, but Andrew, director Jonathan Berry, and their fantastic cast have done beautiful work to make this play incredibly full of life. There's laughter, there's love, and there's even hope. I hope you will come with an open mind, as you would for any new play, and trust these artists to take you on a truly satisfying ride.

Sincerely,

Todd Haimes
