Canadian Premiere of MARK OF A WOMAN is Coming to Theatre Passe Muraille
Chisato Minamimura's solo work arrives at TPM as part of the #BeyondTO Series.
As part of their 2026 #BeyondTO Series, Theatre Passe Muraille will present Mark of A Woman, a powerful performance by acclaimed international artist Chisato Minamimura, onstage May 22 & 23, 2026. This production makes its Canadian premiere at TPM after having toured at several prestigious theatre companies and festivals in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Japan.
Mark of A Woman explores tattooing culture to confront the expectations and constraints society places on women's bodies, defining womanhood across cultures and generations. Drawing on her own lived experiences, Minamimura asks urgent and resonant questions: Can we ever escape the marks others place upon us? And what happens when we reclaim the power to mark ourselves?
Through a fusion of Visual Vernacular, ASL, digital animation, kinetic projection, and Woojer technology, Mark of A Woman reframes tattooing as both a deeply personal and profoundly political act. The performance invites audiences to reexamine how gender is written onto our bodies from birth and what it means to reclaim that power for ourselves.
The show runs 60 min. Tickets are Pay-What-You-Can-Afford – $15 | $40 | $65
Woojer Strap: Woojer straps are vibrating belts designed to provide an additional sensory experience for audiences by allowing users to feel sound vibrations. The straps convert low-frequency sound—like bass, gunshots, or engine roars—into vibrations that you can feel on your body.
Accessibility & Mask Mandatory Performances: The show contains ASL and Visual Vernacular, and is Accessible for Deaf audiences. There are captions during the showing of the films, but not for any other part of the work. There will also be voice-over narration during select scenes. The script is available in advance if requested for accessibility purposes. All shows are in a relaxed environment.
