Staged Reading of Robert Anderson's I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER Set for 6/26 at Teatro Paraguas

By:

A widowed New York college professor, Gene, is in a long distance relationship with a woman in California. He wants to marry and move to California, where his girlfriend has her medical practice and is raising her children. Gene's mother is sympathetic although aware of the toll it could take on his father. Family tensions arise as his father disowned his sister for marrying a Jewish man. When his mother suddenly dies, Gene's plans are thrown into disarray. He has lived in the shadow of his towering father, who is expecting him to stay and watch over him. Gene must decide for himself if he'll stay to care for his father or finally move on with his life.

I Never Sang for My Father features local actors Aaron Leventman, Campbell Martin, Marguerite Scott, Danette Sills, and Richard Parker.

The play opened on Broadway in 1968 where it starred Lillian Gish, Hal Holbrook, and Theresa Wright and ran for only 124 performances but was nominated for a Tony Award for best actor. It was subsequently made into a popular film in 1970 with Gene Hackman, Melvin Douglas, and Estelle Parsons which received 3 Oscar nominations.

Robert Anderson (1917-2009), author, is best-remembered for his play Tea and Sympathy which made its Broadway debut in 1953 and was made into an MGM film in 1956; both starred Deborah Kerr. He also wrote the screenplay for The Nun's Story (1959) for which he was Oscar-nominated as was his 1970 screen adaptation of I Never Sang for My Father. He was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1982.

Maura Studi (Director), wife of Wes Studi (Last of the Mohicans, Avatar) and daughter of Jack Albertson (Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) has acting credits that include NBC and CBS programs. She wrote the screenplay for the documentary A Thousand Voices recently shown on PBS. She previously directed The Subject Was Roses at the Santa Fe Playhouse in 2008, has acted in several Benchwarmers productions, and currently teaches acting classes as Teatro Paraguas.
