Award-winning actor, singer and comedian Waseef Piekaan brings his latest comedy, Wrongly Accused, to the Baxter Masambe Theatre from 18 November to 18 January 2014.

Waseef is one of Cape Town's hottest rising stars, and has impressed audiences in productions such as Vocal is Lekka alongside a star-studded line-up including Terry Fortune, Loukmaan Adams and Bongile Mantsai; and more recently, the a cappella musical, A Town Called Fokol Lutho.

Written and performed by Waseef, who also composed all the songs, Wrongly Accused was first presented at the Baxter Theatre Centre as part of their Zabalaza Festival, which nurtures and showcases the work of new artists. His powerhouse performance won him a Best Actor Award at the Festival and for this holiday season run, Waseef has teamed up with seasoned director Basil Appollis, with co-direction by Thami Mbongo, to develop the production even further.

Wrongly Accused follows a young man from the Eastern Cape who finds himself in deep trouble with the law when he is accused of robbing an Indian cellphone-shop owner. Waseef plays six characters to hilarious effect, blending pathos, comic timing, Ghoema songs and ballads, to create a dynamite theatre experience.

"Wrongly Accused is a disarmingly fresh take on the old story of 'man appears in court and pleads not guilty'", says Appollis. "Waseef takes a walk into the courts where thousands of people appear unnoticed every day and comes out with a theatrical winner."

This is Piekaan's second play to win a Zabalaza Festival Award. Tik Tot Jy Hik addressed the destruction of drug addiction and won him the Most Promising Production award, as well as a nomination for Best Musical Director.

"I am honoured to be back on stage at the Baxter and thank Zabalaza for granting me the opportunity to flex my creative muscles before presenting Wrongly Accused on the mainstream theatre circuit," says Piekaan. "The show is an explosive night of fun entertainment to de-stress from the year!"

Wrongly Accused is a Baxter Theatre and Zabalaza Intsika eBaxter Theatre production. The show is performed in Afrikaans with some English.

Wrongly Accused will be performed in the Baxter Masambe Theatre from 18 November until 18 January 2014 Monday to Saturday at 8.30pm. The performance on 31 January starts at 10.15pm. Tickets cost R100 and R80 for Senior Citizens. Tickets for New Years Eve cost R180 or R170 Early Bird Special (booked before 2 December). The New Years Eve ticket includes a complimentary glass of sparkling wine or orange juice and a spectacular balloon drop.
