Nondumiso Lwazi Msimanga will stage Timberlake Wertenbaker's THE LOVE OF THE NIGHTINGALE as part of POPArt and the Market Theatre Laboratory's season of Greek classics, refreshed and retold for contemporary South African audiences.

This production is being staged in the third year of a partnership between POPArt and the Market Theatre Laboratory, which aims to bring audiences fresh new theatre pieces as part of a business in theatre course. Performers in the course are taught to produce, stage and market their own shows, which are brought on tour to the POPArt Theatre.

THE LOVE OF THE NIGHTINGALE retells the tragic myth of Philomele. When questions go unanswered because society fears its own truths, a woman - whose never-ending shackles mirror the injustices of today - speaks. Her violated voice breaks an unrelenting curse.

THE LOVE OF THE NIGHTINGALE from 13 - 16 April, with shows starting at 20:00 on Thursday through Saturday and at 15:30 on Sunday. The final performance, on Sunday afternoon, will be a "Red My Lips" performance where patrons are asked to wear red lipstick to show support for raising awareness against sexual assault. Tickets are available from the POPArt Theatre website, costing R80 if booked and prepaid online or R100 if paid on collection at the bar. The POPArt Theatre is situated at 286 Fox Street in the Maboneng Precinct of Johannesburg and can be followed on Facebook and Twitter.
