Photo Flash: First Look At THE NOISES In Rehearsal
by A.A. Cristi - Mar 26, 2019

Told entirely from the perspective of a dog, The Noises is a visceral new play about fear, courage, the nature of violence and what we're prepared to do for the ones we love. This new show, longlisted for the 2017 Bruntwood Prize for Playwrighting, will receive its world premiere at The Old Red Lion this April, starring Amy McAllister (Call the Midwife, Scorch). The Noises is a mother and daughter collaboration between TS Eliot Award shortlisted poet and playwright Jacqueline Saphra and director-dramaturg Tamar Saphra, and is a poetic and sensory piece with sound design from Tom Parkinson (I'm A Phoenix, Bitch; Super Duper Close Up). The sound is another character in the play, and the audience hear the world as Luna hears it.

BWW Review: WONDERLAND: ALICE'S ROCK & ROLL ADVENTURE at Rose Theater
by Christine Swerczek - Mar 23, 2018

I wish I could write everything I found beautiful or hilarious or imaginative in this show, but there isn't room. You need to jump down that rabbit hole and see for yourself. Yes, it's impossible to be perfect, but as Alice says, 'I believe in the impossible.' I'm already calling this as a nominee for several awards.

BWW Review: AN AMERICAN IN PARIS opens at The Memphis Orpheum
by Caroline Sposto - Oct 26, 2017

The 2015 musical, inspired by the Oscar-winning film of the same title, features a score by George and Ira Gershwin and a book by Craig Lucas opened at the Memphis Orpheum this week. Because the story centers on Ballet, which I'm not qualified to critique, I brought along Dmitri Roudnev, former Bolshoi soloist and current Ballet Master.

BWW Interview: Gerald Thomson of UNEXPECTED at Brelby Theatre Company
by Jeanmarie Simpson - Apr 3, 2017

I am most concerned with what the audience sees, as they are the viewers/hearers of our story, so what they gather from our performance must be paramount. I come in with a strong image of what I want the show to look like. I then block the show right away to get it on its feet. I call this building the skeleton. The rest of the rehearsal process is about fleshing out that skeleton. I do not have the actors wander the stage looking for what feels right for them. It may end up being more “true to life” by letting two people do what comes naturally, but that does not make for a good presentational performance. I block to keep things visually interesting and I work to use the entire stage.

BWW Interview: Lucas Gomez of BLACKLISTERS at Brelby Theatre Company
by Jeanmarie Simpson - Jan 30, 2017

When I wrote Blacklisters, I was focusing on fascism and totalitarianism through the perspective of the individual in relation to absurdism. It's strange now considering the relevance a lot people who've been involved with the script have given it. On one hand it bugs me that the current events are being very tightly tied to the story when it was not my intention, but I can't deny that interest in it has picked up as a result. As I see it, what I wrote in this show was designed to be slightly unreal and terrifying but not beholden to a specific time period. I also can't deny that inspiration comes from weird places and like most people I was obsessively watching last years politics unfold, largely in horror, so it probably affected me.

BWW Blog: Meggie Cansler of Transcendence Theatre's 'Rhythm of Life' - I'm Changing
by Guest Blogger: Meggie Cansler - Sep 8, 2015

How is it late August already? Kids have already had their first day of school and we have closed our third concert, 'Rhythm of Life'! That is BANANA BOATS! (Cansler speak for nuts!) The community here in Sonoma Valley went nuts for this show. It was a variety show that surprised you with every number. One minute you had a sexy fosse style number, then a lyrical dance to 'Fields of Gold' (danced and choreographed by Amanda Lehmen and Dylan Smith and such by Leslie MacDonnel and Stephen Stubbins)...oh, and can we talk about the fact that I have always thought it was among the fields of BALI??? Barley makes so much more sense. Great job, Meggie! That got the ladies dressing room laughing... There were other stand out numbers packed with energy where there was no dancing at all. My brained was tried and tested with learning a Pointer Sisters duet called 'Cloudburst'. It has so many lyrics and we sing it at lightening speed. It was a quartet of fierce ladies and we practiced every free minute we got... to the point where if you didn't know we were rehearsing, we looked like we were talking to ourselves like crazy people. You know how people look when you don't realize they have a bluetooth in their ear?? Well, picture that and fast forward it 3x and that is what we looked like on any free moment in rehearsal to make sure we got these lyrics out of our mouths! The pay off was awesome! I felt so proud that we did. Seriously, download this song and see what I am talking about!

BWW Blog: Kathryn Mowat Murphy - I'm an Everything Dancer
by Guest Blogger: Kathryn Mowat Murphy - Jun 4, 2013

'I'm an everything dancer'. I sat on the floor of the dance studio and listened to a ballet girl tell me to my face that she, if she chose to, could go out and land herself a Broadway show, as "she is an everything dancer. " I told her to go out and do it, because it's that simple. One day you just wake up and say, "I think I will be a Broadway dancer. To say my blood boiled would be an understatement. Now I am not saying this girl wouldn't do it, she definitely has talent, but to say such a flippant comment directly to someone who has had a Broadway show, is not only arrogant, it is delusional.
