BWW Review: AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE Is as Versatile as Ever in a Mixed BillBWW Review: AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE Is as Versatile as Ever in a Mixed Bill
by Sondra Forsyth - Oct 30, 2015

According to a 1998 review of ABT by Jack Anderson in The New York Times, publicists for the company in the early days used to call the troupe 'a museum of the dance.' Anderson commented that this is a good phrase to describe the company 'provided one realizes that great museums can encourage new art as well as preserve old'. I heartily concur. As I've mentioned before, I always remind my ballet students that we can hang a Rembrandt or a Picasso on a museum wall for posterity, but each generation of dancers must be capable performing both the old and the new if we are to keep our history alive. Fortunately, true to ABT's founding mission 'to develop a repertoire of the best ballets from the past and to encourage the creation of new works by gifted young choreographers,' this national treasure continues to present accurate historical reconstructions as well as new works by today's choreographers. The fall is a special time for Broadway fans, with new plays and musicals opening left and right. However, it is also a special time of year for sports fans, with the baseball playoffs in full swing, college and pro football seasons well underway, and the hockey and basketball schedules kicking off. Inspired by the fact that the New York Mets have advanced to the World Series to take on the Kansas City Royals, Jeff Walker and I decided to take a look at some of the places where sports and Broadway mix. After I graduated from The Ohio State University (college football's defending champion and current No. 1 team, by the way), my first few jobs were in covering and coaching college and professional sports. So, to be able to mix two of my biggest passions, is a lot of fun, so check out our 9 Innings of Sports Showtunes, with special attention paid to America's favorite pastime! (more...)

by Michael Rabice - Jan 27, 2016

The 1970's was an era of self discovery, rebellion and personal exploration. Broadway was morphing from the stock musical comedy formula towards the darker issues of life not usually seen on the musical stage . There was a young Stephen Sondheim delving into the deep interpersonal relations of marriage in COMPANY and FOLLIES, while Michael Bennett had gathered a group of young dancers who were exposing their inner demons and life stories in A CHORUS LINE. Meanwhile the composer Stephen Schwartz began his career with PIPPIN and would later write hit scores for GODSPELL and WICKED (more...)

Sometimes, the Metropolitan Opera seems like an endless Puccini festival. It's particularly apparent this season, when top dogs LA BOHEME, TOSCA and MADAMA BUTTERFLY are joined by TURANDOT and MANON LESCAUT, which are not second drawer, though certainly less popular than the first three.
