BWW Reviews: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis's Masterful Production of SAFE HOUSEBWW Reviews: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis's Masterful Production of SAFE HOUSE
by Chris Gibson - Jan 27, 2015

America has a rich history, some of which, of course, we'd all prefer to forget. But, to ignore them can just lead to repeating them, and we all should know better than that by now. However, it's important that we continue to mine the events of the past in order to enlighten and provoke discussion. This is the very thing that Keith Josef Adkins' brilliant work SAFE HOUSE does with a considerable amount of power and conviction. It's a story set in Kentucky in 1843, when slavery was still very much a resident evil that ruled the land, even though there were African Americans who were freeborn. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is currently presenting this new play, and as they always seem to have a knack for doing, it's done in a completely compelling and infinitely memorable fashion that makes for a truly moving and enriching experience. BWW Reviews: INTERMEZZO DANCE COMPANY Features Large-Scale Talent in a Small-Scale VenueBWW Reviews: INTERMEZZO DANCE COMPANY Features Large-Scale Talent in a Small-Scale Venue
by Elizabeth Portnoy - Jan 22, 2015

New York is the home of some of the most renowned and exemplary dance companies in the world, such as New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theater. It is quite easy for New York balletomanes to fall into the habit of seeing the same iconic and large-scale works year after year. While there is nothing wrong with seeing particular dancers perform well-known works with their respective companies repeatedly, it is quite refreshing to see some of these New York based dancers perform new works on a much smaller scale. Russian National Ballet to Bring SWAN LAKE to Spencer Theater, 1/30Russian National Ballet to Bring SWAN LAKE to Spencer Theater, 1/30
by BWW News Desk - Jan 21, 2015

A sparkling jewel of the Russian National Ballet Theatre classic repertoire is 'Swan Lake,' a tale of love and heartache performed the world over. Premiering in 1877, the last of the great 19th-century Russian ballets, it is a work of emotional intensity, inventive choreography and glorious music. And because the principal roles of the two leading swan characters are typically danced by the same ballerina, it is a ballet that features the most challenging and desired part for any female to dance in the entire classical repertoire. BWW Reviews: Candlelight Pavilion's BUDDY HOLLY STORY RocksBWW Reviews: Candlelight Pavilion's BUDDY HOLLY STORY Rocks
by Don Grigware - Jan 20, 2015

One of the first - if not the first jukebox musicals, The Buddy Holly Story is short on plot and high on the unique rock and roll music of Buddy Holly. This is my second time seeing the show - I first saw it on its American tour in 1999. The music I grew up with in the 50s is so appealing, that I sing along to every tune and move and groove in my seat from start to finish. If you are of that nature - and it seemed that many in the audience on opening weekend fit the bill - then you will have a really good time at Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theatre through February 22. Remember, it's enjoyable fare with no need to think, just set your mind to the relax mode! (more...)

by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Jan 20, 2015

Theater for Young Audiences (TYA) might be brushed aside, dismissed by adults who give this professional genre less significance. First Stage proves this preconception about TYA untrue when they opened an adaptation of Jerry Spinelli's 2002 New York Times bestselling novel Stargirl in the Todd Wehr Theater January 18. Award winning playwright Y York adapted the crossover novel read by adults and youth alike into a poignant character driven script filled with humor that delves into the difficulties growing up at 16 in high school. An age when remaining true to an independent personality with a belief in kindness and nonconformity suffers under peer pressure. (more...)
