Irish Repertory Theatre will continue its current season with a revival of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, The 1946 Live Radio Play, adapted by Anthony E. Palermo from the screenplay by Francis Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Frank Capra and Jo Swerling. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, The 1946 Live Radio Play premiered last year at the Irish Repertory Theatre with a production directed by Charlotte Moore (JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK, DANCING AT LUGHNASA). Once again directed by Ms. Moore, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, The 1946 Live Radio Play will begin previews on Wednesday, December 4th and will play through Sunday, December 29th in The Irish Repertory Theatre's W. My distant cousin Walter Elias 'Walt' Disney had a knack for turning everything into perfection, or at least practically perfect in every way. He took the mean, cranky nanny from P.L. Travers' book "Mary Poppins" and turned her into a saint. He excised two of the four Banks children, allowing the cutest ones to remain in the story. Travers' nanny couldn't dance on rooftops, didn't have adventures with Bert, didn't win at the horse races and couldn't sing. Travers was Australian; they take pride in being able to endure aggressive crocodiles, harsh deserts and appalling alloparenting. For those of us in the northern hemisphere who prefer our protagonists to be a bit on the spoonful of sugar side, Disney's Mary Poppins is just the ticket. (more...)

Ciaran Sheehan to Lead Holiday Sing-a-long at Bay Street Theatre

Bay Street Theatre has announced a special holiday event for the entire family. The 4th Annual HOLIDAY CONCERT AND SING-A-LONG on Tuesday, December 18 at 7 pm features the Broadway Irish tenor CIARAN SHEEHAN accompanied by pianist BRENDA LANDRUM, and is made possible by the generous gifts of some Bay Street patrons. Executive Director Walter Stearns Announces Mercury Theater Subscription Series

Executive Director Walter Stearns announced today that he will launch a subscription series at the Mercury Theater including four full productions, which will transform the Mercury into the largest producer of musicals in the city of Chicago; employing almost one hundred theater professionals. Plans are to produce Rogers and Hammerstein's A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING which features songs such as 'Oh What a Beautiful Mornin', 'Some Enchanted Evening' and 'If I Loved You' in January. In March, the Mercury will stage a revival of BARNUM, the Cy Coleman circus musical centered around legendary showman P.T. Barnum, complete with professional circus performers. August brings the regional premiere of THE COLOR PURPLE, the Broadway hit based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel and subsequent Steven Spielberg film. The season concludes with the return voyage of the popular holiday musical,THE CHRISTMAS SCHOONER. Single tickets are available for $29 and up, and 3 show subscription packages start as low as $80. Season packages and A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING tickets go on-sale November 16th. (more...)

It's imbued with McCourt's unique humor and draws on his personal experience as an Irish-American. Told through a revue of songs, this sometime irreverent but always loving look at the Irish people includes such immortals as "Danny Boy," "The Rose of Tralee, and "Harrigan"-the works of George M. The Mercury Theater, 3745 N. Southport, begins its highly anticipated 2013 season with the exhilarating Broadway musical revue A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING, running from January 16 through March 10, 2013. The press opening is Sunday, January 20 at 2 p.m. The Tony Award-nominated musical showcases Richard Rodgers' timeless music and the incomparable lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein. The production is directed and choreographed by multiple Jeff Award winner Kevin Bellie, who previously served as Artistic Director at Circle Theatre. (more...)

Bay Street Theatre has announced a special holiday event for the entire family. The 4th Annual HOLIDAY CONCERT AND SING-A-LONG tonight, December 18 at 7 pm features the Broadway Irish tenor Ciaran Sheehan accompanied by pianist Brenda Landrum, and is made possible by the generous gifts of some Bay Street patrons. Executive Director Walter Stearns announces a new season at Mercury Theater Chicago, 3745 N. Southport Avenue, including Into the Woods, Avenue Q, The Addams Family - The Musical and The Christmas Schooner. As the season opener, Mercury Theater Chicago presents The Hypocrites Theater Company in a revolutionary staging of the Sondheim storybook musical Into the Woods. This is followed by the professional Chicago premiere of Avenue Q - a coming of age musical in the style of an adult "Sesame Street." Just in time for Halloween, The Addams Family - the Musical will haunt the Mercury Theater stage. The season finale is the return voyage of the Chicago holiday tradition, The Christmas Schooner.
