Photo Coverage: Curtain Calls and Stage Door Fun at the Rockin' MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING At T.U. Studios
by Lily Lim - Sep 16, 2016

This production of Shakespeare's popular romantic comedy is enhanced by a rock-and-roll score. Much Ado About Nothing is set in Messina, Sicily. Beatrice, niece of the local governor Leonato, and Benedick, a gentleman and friend of the powerful Prince of Aragon Don Pedro, are seeming adversaries, engaging in much verbal jousting and argument. The antagonistic remarks fool neither the men nor the women in Don Pedro's court; Beatrice and Benedick are obviously meant for each other, even if their love isn't instantly apparent. Their friends conspire to trick them into confessing their love for each other. (more...)

BWW Review: THE ECCENTRICITIES OF A NIGHTINGALE Beautifully Tells a Tale of Romantic Love and Spiritual Longing
by Shari Barrett - Jun 25, 2016

Centered around the same characters first introduced in his play Summer and Smoke, Williams now explores how despite their differences, John Buchanan (the almost too handsome Andrew Dits) and Alma Winemiller (Ginna Carter who totally embodies the quirky character who sings like a Southern nightingale), are still magnetically drawn to each other after he returns home to Glorius Hill, Mississippi, following his Summa Cum Laude graduation as a medical doctor from Johns Hopkins University. The preacher's daughter boldly seizes on a chance to follow her heart's inclinations in their small town where, too often, dreams die quickly. Tennessee Williams' subtly seductive play centers on the passionately complex and sometimes cruel relationships to which love becomes vulnerable, when we are strong enough to allow it. (more...)

BWW Review: Lovely Dreamlike Production of THE GLASS MENAGERIE at City Theatre
by Frank Benge - Jul 25, 2016

THE GLASS MENAGERIE was Tennessee Williams first successful play. It premiered in Chicago in 1944 and later transferred to Broadway. This four character memory play took Williams from obscurity to fame, winning the New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1945. The most strongly autobiographical of his work it features characters based on his overbearing mother and his fragile sister Rose. Before the play Williams had covered the material in both a short story called 'Portrait of a Girl in Glass' and a screenplay written earlier called The Gentleman Caller. The play is the most lyrically beautiful of all of Williams work, due mostly to the poetry of Tom's soliloquies to the audience. It examines the isolation of people who can't connect to each other or the world at large. (more...)

BWW Review: Senior Editor DON GRIGWARE Gives His Annual Eddon Awards in Honor of the Best in Los Angeles Theatre for 2016
by Don Grigware - Jan 3, 2017

There are undoubtedly other productions worthy of merit in 2016 which I did not cover. This list is based only on what I saw and reviewed. (alphabetical listings; Equity, Equity-waiver & Non-Equity productions are mixed) (artists performing outside LA may be included in performance categories) No set, costume, technical awards. I leave that to the bigger awards and to the expertise of those who really know those fields inside out. (more...)

BWW Review: Angelica Page Brilliantly Lives Out Her Mother's Life and Career in TURNING PAGE
by Don Grigware - Jan 27, 2017

Angelica Page stands quietly stage left and watches a home movie of herself on a giant rear screen. She sees a seemingly innocent little girl running around and playing with her mother Geraldine Page. When the film is over, she steps forward ever so slowly into the spotlight and addresses the audience fearlessly, 'My mother is haunting me.' At that precise moment, we sense we are in good hands. The family talent assuredly has rubbed off on Angelica Page, and we are in for a brilliantly honed theatrical evening. (more...)

BWW Review: Theatre In the Round's A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE is a Well-Directed, -Acted, and -Designed Production of a Classic American Tragedy
by Jill Schafer - Jan 17, 2017

If you're a fan of American theater classics, get yourself to Theatre in the Round in the West Bank neighborhood of Minneapolis. Their excellent production of Arthur Miller's A View From the Bridge features strong performances from the whole cast (particularly the leads), a really cool set with vintage props, and great staging in their intimate in-the-round setting. This completely engrossing and tragic story of flawed and very real characters navigating hard times and tricky family relations in 1950s working class Brooklyn will get under your skin. It's one of those experiences that makes you feel like you've been on a journey with these characters, one that's hard to shake when you leave the theater. It's probably the second best play I've seen at TRP. Don't let this one fly under your radar. (more...)

BWW Review: TURNING PAGE at Dixon Place is a Tour de Force
by Melanie Votaw - Feb 28, 2017

In the one-woman show TURNING PAGE, Angelica Page takes on perhaps the role of her career - that of her real-life mother, Geraldine Page, who was theater, Hollywood and Actors Studio royalty. A daunting role, to be sure. Angelica says at the top of the piece that her mother asked her to see that her story was told. Eventually, Angelica decided to "channel" her mother in this way to keep the iconic actress' legacy alive. (more...)

BWW Review: PRT's Superlative ECCENTRICITIES OF A NIGHTINGALE Extends
by Don Grigware - Aug 15, 2016

1948's Summer and Smoke was rewritten in the 60s by Tennessee Williams and what resulted was a more clearly structured/themed play with the same central characters entitled The Eccentricities of a Nightingale. Music teacher Miss Alma (Ginna Carter), daughter of an Episcopal minister Reverend Winemiller (Brad Greenquist), was passionately in love with her neighbor young Dr. John Buchanan (Andrew Dits) and when that love was unrequited rather than become a miserable spinster, she turned to  prostitution. Now in a rare and lovely production of the refined play at PRT, poetic spirit is alive and well in Miss Alma, the Spanish word for soul. (more...)

BWW Review: Sizzling West Coast Premiere of Authorized Tennessee Williams' BABY DOLL at the Fountain
by Don Grigware - Aug 1, 2016

I cannot think of a better way to spend a hot summer night than to watch a sizzling stage production of a Tennessee Williams film. Baby Doll, when it first arrived in 1956, was condemned by the Catholic Church for indecency, and because of its lewd poster-sized ad depicting Carroll Baker lying in a crib, sucking her thumb, was one of the most controversial films across America. Now, almost 70 years later, the West Coast premiere stage adaptation by Pierre Laville and Emily Mann of Williams' Baby Doll is a practically flawless production at the Fountain Theatre, directed with stunning clarity by Simon Levy...and boasting an unforgettably ingenious cast of five. BWW Feature: Mark and Ryan Kleinman, Living the Dream
by Jeanmarie Simpson - Apr 23, 2017

I am incredibly proud of all my kids and Ryan is pursuing his dream as a performer. He has been performing for quite awhile now as a professional and I have had the idea that this would be so since about his Junior year in High School. I have always taken the time to include my kids (when they have shown an interest) into the shows I was doing. Ryan and his older sister, Kaitlynn, were able to be more inundated with it at a young age as I was more active as a professional performer and they got to be backstage and at rehearsal, and often in shows with me. Whenever I was in a show that needed kids, I got them an audition and, since they were talented, often got cast, so we were able to share the stage. Sound of Music, South Pacific, Music Man, Secret Garden, A Christmas Carol, all shows that my kids been able to share with me. (more...)
