BWW Review: Tori Scott Provides Post-Election Catharsis in SEEING DOUBLE at Joe's Pub
by Troy Frisby - Nov 30, 2016

Early on in Tori Scott's SEEING DOUBLE, the woman of the hour deadpanned, 'I've been in a rut since birth.' If that's the case, we should all be so lucky. But on the subject of things that could be going better, throughout Scott's performance at Joe's Pub on November 13, the unofficial theme of the night was, 'Could this year get any worse?' With the election still looming large, Scott took the stage, explaining she'd been looking forward to the show because she was in need of some attention, before adding, 'Then Tuesday happened and I needed group therapy.' BWW Review: O'Neill's A TOUCH OF THE POET Reveals Volcanic Forces Stewing in an Irish Tavern in 1828
by Shari Barrett - Dec 5, 2016

Eugene O'Neill is the only American playwright ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature and he is a four-time recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. Between 1920 and 1943, he completed 20 long plays, with several of them double and triple length. And unfortunately, the current Pacific Resident production comes in at over 3 hours, a trying time for a play with such dramatic verbiage that it is necessary to pay full attention throughout since O'Neill's brilliant writing is both incredibly introspective yet often very repetitive. So be sure not to eat a huge meal before attending so the urge to fall asleep does not overtake you. (more...)

BWW Review: Gallery Players' 13: THE MUSICAL Brings Back All Painful Awkwardness of Middle School
by Paul Batterson - Dec 5, 2016

Ahhh, the joys of middle school: three years of bad skin, Mrs. Goldsmith's English class, bullies, popularity contests, and enough deep, emotional scars to fill therapists' offices for years to come. The Gallery Players production of 13: THE MUSICAL, the witty and at times painfully accurate depiction of that delightful time right before high school, is dead on the money. (more...)

BWW Review: Penobscot Theatre Greets Holiday Season with OLIVER!
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Dec 5, 2016

Bangor's Penobscot Theatre Company is devoting the month of December to a jaunty, spirited production of the Lionel Bart musical, Oliver!. Directed/choreographed by Allison Bibicoff, production is clearly a labor of love, employing (for this theatre) a moderately large cast and the best of the company's current resources. The result is energetic and entertaining with moments of engaging drama. (more...)

BWW Review: Nick Cordero Leads Robert De Niro/Jerry Zaks-Directed A BRONX TALE To Broadway
by Michael Dale - Dec 2, 2016

When the new musical based on Chazz Palminteri's autobiographical solo play, A BRONX TALE had its world premiere at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse earlier this year, it boasted a solid first act, a terrific star performance by Nick Cordero, an Alan Menken/Glenn Slater song that every Sinatra-styled saloon singer will want to grab. It also featured some of those traditional second act problems that often plague new musicals looking for a Broadway home. (more...)

BWW Review: 21st Annual Youth Musical THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE a Big Hit at the Morgan-Wixson
by Shari Barrett - Dec 2, 2016

Surely most theatre folks have seen productions of the fabulous musical THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical, making the show the 2002 season's most awarded new show on Broadway, based on the original story and screenplay by Richard Morris for the 1967 Universal Pictures film directed by George Roy Hill and starring Julie Andrews. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, the current production directed by Anne Gesling for the Y.E.S. Youth/Teen Program at Santa Monica's Morgan-Wixson Theatre is just as good as many adult production I have seen, given the cast's talent, Gesling's spot-on fast-paced direction and fabulous 1920's costuming, Daniel Koh's musical direction creating wonderful cast harmonies, and creative choreography by Lauren Blair. BWW Review: Stoneham Theatre's Spirited MAME Just in Time for Christmas

Kathy St. George may be diminutive in stature, but she is a feisty force of nature as the title character in MAME at Stoneham Theatre. BWW Review: BROADWAY LOVES BRITNEY Does It Again at Feinstein's/54 Below
by Troy Frisby - Dec 1, 2016

Because Britney Spears grew up in the Spotlight, we've seen her as a singer, an actress, a girl, a woman, and everything in between. One thing we haven't seen is Britney the Broadway star, but since that seems about as likely as the second coming of Britney and Justin, it's a damn good thing BROADWAY LOVES BRITNEY exists. On November 16, a group of Broadway performers came together at Feinstein's/54 Below for exactly what the name suggests---a deep dive into Britney's oeuvre---and, as far as Britney homages go, the show hit all quadrants, running the gamut from playful impersonations to cleverly reworked gems.
