BWW Reviews: Everything's Coming Up Roses at GYPSYBWW Reviews: Everything's Coming Up Roses at GYPSY
by Jeff Davis - Mar 5, 2015

Ask any musical theater junkie what's the best musical of all time, and any worth their spit will answer with one word: Gypsy. The iconic show is highly regarded to this day with good reason. The score's infectious, the sets and costumes eye-catching, and the characters, particularly that of Mama Rose, are on par with those found in plays by Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams. Gypsy isn't just musical theater. It's a great American Drama, and all that the show can and should be comes to vivid life in The Playhouse's current production. (more...)

HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA: University School of Nashville's AIDAN WATTHIGH SCHOOL DRAMA: University School of Nashville's AIDAN WATT
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 5, 2015

Today the Spotlight shines on University School of Nashville's Aidan Watt, who during his four years at USN has been cast in every production - "aside from Noises Off, which I did tech for," he explains. As part of the amazing theater program at USN, Aidan's been learning from the best: Catherine Coke, whose resume includes work on all levels of professional theater, heads the program, with the estimable Jim Manning, perhaps Nashville's hardest working scenic designer (not to detract from any of the other designers in town, of course, who do great work, but Jim Manning - a 2012 First Night Star Award winner - tends to work on multiple productions for multiple companies at the same time. Whew!), heading technical and design teams. (more...)

BWW Reviews: INSIDE OUT Rocks the Grove Theater CenterBWW Reviews: INSIDE OUT Rocks the Grove Theater Center
by Don Grigware - Mar 2, 2015

Inside Out/book by Doug Haverty/music by Adryan Russ/lyrics by Haverty & Russ/directed by Bruce Kimmel/The Grove Theater Center, Burbank/through March 22 Celebrating its 20th anniversary the little musical Inside Out by Doug Haverty and Adryan Russ throws a boldly bright Spotlight on the positive loving effects of group therapy. Based on the actual accounts of women who joined a group in the early 90s, Inside Out shares their stories...and the music is not only part of the plot, as pop singer Dena (Leslie Stevens) agonizes over the challenges of making a comeback, but more urgently becomes the almost guaranteed therapeutic force of nature for the entire piece. Six outstanding singers/actresses under the uber skilled direction of Bruce Kimmel dispense advice and sing and move with electrifying verve. Now onstage at the Grove Theater Center in Burbank, Inside Out may very well prove to be a better tonic than a gospel revival. In fact, it's assuredly the most effervescent all-girl group in town! by Robert Lawlor - Feb 28, 2015

Last week, wedding bells rang for two of Glee's finest couples, and there was lots of bliss and good times for all involved. With Brittany and Santana's wedding, one didn't expect anything less than something grand, and it was certainly grand. Brittany planned a big wedding in the barn she was born in, and despite panicking over all the details and things that could go wrong, Brittany had her lady there to give her an open mind. Of course, Santana was determined to keep Sue from attending their wedding and ruining the spirit of their love with her usual ways, but in usual Sue form - she got her way in the end and made a big splash by bringing Santana's Abuela to boot. After some real talk, Santana's Abuela was on the bandwagon, and Sue was part of the Brittana walk down the aisle. (more...)
