Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is one of those timeless stories that has been told and retold in many different ways. Scrooge! The Musical is a stage musical with book, music, and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. Its score and book are closely adapted from the music and screenplay of the 1970 musical film "Scrooge" starring Albert Finney. Bricusse was nominated for the Academy Award for the song score he wrote for the film, and most of those songs were carried over to the musical. Some favorites include, "Happiness," "Love While You Can," " The Minister's Cat," and "Thank You Very Much".

Diversionary to Present LISA KRON IN REPERTORY
by BWW News Desk - Dec 27, 2016

This Spring, Diversionary continues its tradition of presenting innovative theatre. For the first time in history, two plays by Tony Award Winner Lisa Kron (Broadway's FUN HOME) will play in rotating repertory. As female playwrights continue to fight for equal representation  in the American theatre, THE KRON REP offers a heaping dose of gender parity. In both 2.5 MINUTE RIDE and WELL, the playwright's life gets catapulted onto the stage. These two autobiographical(ish) plays delightfully fracture theatrical structure, turning conventional notions of theatre on its head. (more...)

BWW Review: ELF - THE MUSICAL Jingles into OC's Segerstrom Center
by Michael L. Quintos - Dec 26, 2016

Upon learning that part of Segerstrom Center for the Arts' holiday programming this season was to finally bring a national tour production of ELF - THE MUSICAL---the 2010 Broadway stage musical adaptation of the popular Will Ferrell holiday movie---to its stage, I was pretty ecstatic. For the most part, ELF---which performs at SCFTA through January 1, 2017---delivers enjoyable laughs sprinkled here and there throughout its two acts, and even offers up a non-equity cast equipped with lovely singing voices. But while ELF - THE MUSICAL is certainly festive and has lots of smile-inducing moments, overall, I felt the presented production felt surprisingly subdued. While, sure, it had plenty of genuinely funny and heart-warming moments, many aspects of the NETworks Presentations production needed to be much more over-the-top, manic, and downright silly. BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL Succeeds in Finding The Heart of The Show
by Jude Buot - Dec 22, 2016

Almost everyone loves Christmas. Almost, since there is The Grinch and an old fellow named Ebenezer Scrooge. The latter is the main character in Charles Dickens' novel titled 'A Christmas Carol.' His story is quite popular, not just among literature fans, because it served as inspiration to some TV shows, movies, and, of course, musicals. Scrooge is the grumpy, greedy old man who had a change of heart during Christmas day, after being visited by three Ghosts of Christmas. (more...)

by Nicky Sweetland - Dec 19, 2016

The classic Charles Dickens' fable, A Christmas Carol, can be seen in many guises over the festive period, but Simon Callow's one-man presentation of the epic saga at the Arts Theatre, is an excellent illustration of how a well-written traditional tale needs no frills and can stand alone when told with gusto by an accomplished stage maestro. BWW Review: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis's Timeless Classic A CHRISTMAS CAROL
by Chris Gibson - Dec 16, 2016

Perhaps the best way to approach Dickens' venerable A CHRISTMAS CAROL is straight-forward, with a generous helping of music, sterling performances, and some cool effects to liven up the proceedings. After all, the story, which dates from 1843, has been reworked, parodied, and used as a device by nearly every sitcom and animated show ever made. So, what's old seems new again in The Repertory of St. Louis' current presentation for the holidays. And, what a treat it is. David H. Bell's adaptation is faithful to the spirit and language of the story, which occurs when the industrial revolution has wreaked havoc on the lives of both the old and young. Filled with energy and enthusiasm, this is an absolute must-see for the Christmas season! (more...)
