On March 27 & 28, 2015, Co-Artistic Directors, Gelsey Kirkland and Michael Chernov presented, at Peter Norton Symphony Space, a double bill of Marius Petipa's ballets of another era, well chosen for their young company, a large number of whom are students at the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet. Harlequinade, choreographed in 1900, to the music of Riccardo Drigo, is a classic comedy based on the characters of Commedia Dell'Arte. Cavalry Halt, created in 1896, to the music of Johann Armsheimer and Johann Strauss, is rarely performed today. I had never seen it. (more...)

The College of Performing Arts at The New School will present the first annual (Un)Silent Film Night, in which music ensembles from the College's performing arts schools-the Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz, and the School of Drama-will perform live with screenings of landmark silent films. This inaugural program, hosted by Matthew Broderick, marks the debut of the Mannes Theatre Orchestra, which, under the baton of Charles Neidich, will perform a new score by Craig Marks to the Buster Keaton film Sherlock Jr. (1924). The screening/concert will also feature the School of Jazz Improvisation Ensemble, led by Alexis Cuadrado, presenting the premiere of Cuadrado's original score to the 1917 Charlie Chaplin classic The Immigrant. In the fifth episode of this season of COMMUNITY, we find Jeff squaring off against Willy, an inmate taking classes at Greendale as a part of a rehabilitation program. Greendale is allowing prisoners to be students, attending classes via 'telepresence robots,' which are essentially rolling iPads on a stick. The Dean green-lights this program due to Jeff's insistence, since the school would get a $300,000 incentive for allowing the inmates to attend class. (more...)

Nearly 400 people hooped, hollered and packed the auditorium at the Center of Creative Arts (COCA) on Monday, March 23, 2015 for the third annual St. Louis Theater Circle Awards ceremony. The event honors outstanding achievement in local professional theater by performers and behind-the-scenes artists. Awards were given in 31 different categories covering comedy, drama and musicals, along with two special awards bestowed on Donna Northcott, founder and artistic director of St. Louis Shakespeare, and Agnes Wilcox, founder and artistic director of Prison Performing Arts. Both women have retired this year and turned their companies over to new artistic directors, Suki Peters for St. Louis Shakespeare and Christopher Limber at Prison Performing Arts. (more...)

The Old Globe today announced the complete cast and creative team for George Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man, joining celebrated director Jessica Stone, who recently made her Globe debut with Christopher Durang's Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Shaw's Romantic Comedy, which continues the Globe's 80th Anniversary festivities as part of the Balboa Park Centennial Celebration, will run May 9 - June 14, 2015 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Preview performances run May 9 through 13. Opening night is Thursday, May 14 at 8:00 p.m. (more...)
