Prominent Soprano Roberta Peters Dies at Age 86

Roberta Peters, one of the most prominent American singers to achieve lasting fame and success in opera, has passed away at the age of 86.  Peters is noted for her 35-year association with the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York, among the longest such associations between a singer and a company in opera. She was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1998. Unpublished Mark Twain Children's Book to be Completed and Released by Random House, 9/26

Doubleday Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children's Books, has acquired a never-before-published Mark Twain children's story, it was announced today by Mallory Loehr, Senior Vice President & Publisher of the Random House/Golden Books, Doubleday, and Crown Books for Young Readers Group. The story, a fairy tale left unfinished by Twain, will be brought to life by author Philip Stead and illustrator Erin Stead, the creators of the Caldecott Medal–winning A Sick Day for Amos McGee. The book, THE PURLOINING OF PRINCE OLEOMARGARINE, was acquired and edited by Frances Gilbert, Associate Publishing Director, Random House Books for Young Readers, from Tina Wexler at ICM, representing the Mark Twain House & Museum, and Emily van Beek at Folio Jr., representing the author/illustrator team. The five burly Brits, backed by a shredding band and a bevy of beautiful dancers from famed Sunset Strip burlesque troupe, Little Miss Nasty, were met with countless standing ovations from the packed theater throughout the evening, as they delivered reimagined renditions of the most beloved rock anthems and biggest songs of all time. With special permission from Stephen King, Playhouse Merced will be producing "Stephen King's The Shining."  This live stage adaptation of King's classic novel follows the story of Jack Torrance and his family as they move into the Overlook Hotel after Jack is hired as winter caretaker.  Cut off from civilization, Jack battles alcoholism and bouts of uncontrolled rage, all while trying to write a play.  Meanwhile, evil forces linked to the Overlook's violent history take advantage of Jack's weaknesses in order to claim of his son, Danny, and his precognitive powers. Alex Leonard is a classy performer. His relaxed, minimalist style and adherence to vocals as written take one back to an agreeable past. Jazz riffs weave around rather than obscure melody. Lyric meaning is gracefully maintained. Aided and abetted by expert veterans Jay Leonhart on bass and Al Gafa on guitar, Leonard saluted the great Nat King Cole at Pangea on January 18 with a bit of history, a couple of illuminating anecdotes, and signature songs.
