Featured performers include Brendan August Kelly (Ypsilanti), Roy Sexton (Saline), David Francis Kiley (Ann Arbor), John DeMerell (Walled Lake), Sarah Ann Leahy (Ann Arbor), Paige Martin (Ann Arbor), Cathy McDonald (Plymouth), Christina McKim (Albion), Jenna Kellie Pittman (Waterford/West Bloomfield), Linda Rabin Hammell (Detroit), Jeff Stringer (Jackson), Maika Van Oosterhout (Ann Arbor), and Daniel Bachelis (Howell). Reflections: What SINGIN' IN THE RAIN Lacks in Star Power, It Makes Up for In Extended Scenes, Live SpectacleReflections: What SINGIN' IN THE RAIN Lacks in Star Power, It Makes Up for In Extended Scenes, Live Spectacle
by Oliver Oliveros - Jul 28, 2015

When compared to 'Sunset Boulevard,' (orig. film: 1950; West End premiere: 1993), which follows the same classic film-to-stage pedigree as 'Singin' In the Rain' (orig. film: 1952; West End premiere: 1983) and tackles the same dilemma of making the transition from silent films to talkies in the 1920s--albeit of psychological melodrama in genre compared to the latter's rollicking parody--'Sunset Boulevard' had big stars of stage and screen who headlined West End and Broadway, i.e. Patti LuPone, Glenn Close, and Elaine Paige who played the faded silent movie star Norma Desmond. Whereas 'Singin' In the Rain' did not delve into such stunt casting from the onset--unless you consider Tommy Steele, who originated the role of Don Lockwood in the West End, as big as Elvis Presley or Gene Kelly, the silver screen's original Lockwood. BWW Reviews: New Compact HAIRSPRAY A Rousing Winner at OC's Chance TheaterBWW Reviews: New Compact HAIRSPRAY A Rousing Winner at OC's Chance Theater
by Michael L. Quintos - Jul 27, 2015

Bravo to Chance Theater for taking on this mainstream hit and making it actually feel like a fresh, awesome little indie. Now playing through August 9, the latest offering from Orange County's bold, award-winning regional theater company is their own 'intimate' theater re-staging of HAIRSPRAY, the 2002 hit Tony Award-winning musical comedy. The results? Quite simply a more compact production that is an absolutely undeniable, all-around rousing winner. Under the direction of Kari Hayter, the celebratory production's immersive, semi-theater-in-the-round minimalist approach actually thrusts the show's outstanding music and comedy out front, wonderfully blanketing the audience in the show's pro-integration, pro-acceptance storyline about a rotund young lady with big hair and big dreams who sets off to change the world.
