In 1975, filmmakers Albert and David Maysles brought their cameras into the crumbling, palatial estate of Edith Bouvier Beale (the aunt of Jackie Kennedy) and her daughter, Little Edie. There they found two women ostracized from their community, hanging on to reality by a thread, and surrounded by dozens of cats and raccoons. Grey Gardens, the Musical examines both the back-story of this fascinating family and the fate they couldn't possibly have imagined. It was the first musical on Broadway ever to be adapted from a documentary. (more...)

by Matt Tamanini - Apr 16, 2015

There is a tradition in the American theatre popularized by some of our country's greatest playwrights; Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee and others. Though generally a product of the mid-20th Century, the trend was reignited in 2007 by Tracy Letts' riveting Tony and Pulitzer-winning play AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY. Since, innumerable new works have put a different spin on the dysfunctional family torn asunder by the ramifications of alcohol and drug addiction; and frankly, it's time for that trend to stop. by Billie Roe - Apr 14, 2015

It was more than fitting that the New York cabaret community should honor the late Jerry Scott last Saturday night at Parnell's--the last piano bar that Jerry played before he died in April, 2013 at 67. To honor Jerry's memory and his lifetime of achievements, three devoted friends, cabaret reviewer John Hoglund, Allan Armour, and Geri Malino produced The First Annual Jerry Scott Memorial Award Show. This yearly event will not only pay tribute to Jerry's extraordinary talent, but the award will be presented to an exceptional entertainer/performer in the Manhattan Piano Bar/Lounge/Restaurant scene. The first recipient of the aptly named “Bronze Piano” was Bobby Peaco, a well-respected member of the New York cabaret community for more than 20 years. (more...)
