BWW Review: Loudmouth Collective WAITING FOR WAITING FOR GODOT is a Clever, Funny, and Silly Companion Play to the Beckett Classic
by Jill Schafer - Sep 28, 2016

WAITING FOR WAITING FOR GODOT is definitely the lightest and funniest show Loudmouth Collective has done in their five seasons. And friends, it's really funny. Playwright Dave Hanson has written a clever, smart, and silly companion play to Beckett's classic absurdist play WAITING FOR GODOT, in which two understudies are waiting backstage for their moment in the spotlight. Much like the original, WAITING FOR WAITING FOR GODOT is kind of just two idiots blathering about nothing. But in doing so the play touches on the nature of acting and waiting and being. It's another great choice for Loudmouth. As much as I love their dark and intense side, what a treat it is to watch them be fun and playful, while still putting on a sharp and all-around high-quality production with a dream team of cast and creative. In short - go see it! (more...)

BWW Review: ASSASSINS Musically Explores the Minds of Those Who Attempted to Assassinate the President of the United States
by Shari Barrett - Sep 28, 2016

The great genius of contemporary musical theater, creator of Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and Company, Stephen Sondheim leads audiences on a tuneful revue of presidential assassins and would-be killers from John Wilkes Booth to John Hinckley. The performance is guided by the Proprietor (brilliantly portrayed by Will Shure) who takes you through a most unusual musical history lesson in the form of a carnival game called "Shoot the Prez - Win a Prize" during which the sounds of each era accompany riveting portrayals of history's most impassioned and deranged. Thought-provoking and darkly delightful, ASSASSINS won five Tony Awards in its first revival on Broadway and remains one of the most controversial Broadway musicals ever written. (more...)

Iconotheatrix presents Carrie: The Musical October 20-23, 2016 at The MATCH (Midtown Arts and Theatre Center Houston). In this revamped, contemporary version of the famous (and infamous) 1988 production, Carrie: The Musical follows a young woman, Carrie White (Courtlin Parisher) with telekinetic powers. An outcast at school, where she is bullied viciously for her differences, Carrie is also lost at home, with a fervently religious mother, Margaret White (guest artist, Rachel Landon) whose love traps her in its maw. When PE teacher, Miss Gardner (guest artist Morgan Kaupert), kind classmate Sue Snell (Jackie Cortina), and boyfriend Tommy Ross (Brendan Morrow) reach out to try and help Carrie, it seems that for once, Carrie might have a shot at being accepted. But Chris Hargensen (Cassidy D'Agostino), the class's most vicious bully, and Billy Nolan (Alex Kerry), her not-so-bright boyfriend, have other ideas. Pushed to the brink, Carrie's powers threaten to overwhelm her, and devour everyone around her in flame. (more...)

BWW Review: Sky Candy's AGENT ANDROMEDA: THE ORION CRUSADE Dazzles at Daring Heights in East Austin
by Amy Bradley - Sep 19, 2016

Sky Candy presents AGENT ANDROMEDA: THE ORION CRUSADE, this show is a fantastic out of this world experience currently blasting off at Sky Candy aerial and circus studio in East Austin. Written by Reina Hardy, this vaudevillian style show delights while adding cheeky commentary reminiscent of The Rocky Horror Picture Show set in space. Setting the premise with three young girls enjoying a girl power comic, Agent Andromeda, the show rises into space with a sex positive, racy adventure to find 'The Overflowing Chalice'. Heightening this sexy adventure, director Rudy Ramirez appropriately uses the actors bodies as props in aerial segments that are pure amazement. This aspect of the show takes off with the entry of The Dark Queen (played by Shannon Grounds), who through her folly of racing Agent Andromeda (played by Caroline Poe)  to the overflowing chalice, thoroughly and hysterically abuses her comrades. Love triangles are introduced, sexualities defined and simultaneously questioned. (more...)
