Donna McKechnie Brings Cabaret Show to Martinis Above Fourth
by BWW News Desk - May 19, 2017

Tony Award winner, Donna McKechnie's new show, Same Place: Another Time, is a musical deja vu celebrating the scintillating 70's in New York City - the heyday of Studio 54. The journey she takes puts a personal spin on the "ingenue" coming to New York, finding love and success, losing her innocence along the way, perhaps, but never her spirit. It is beautifully illuminated by the music of Irving Berlin, Stephen Sondheim, Marvin Hamlisch, Peter Allen, Jim Croce and Leroy Anderson. (more...)

High School Drama: Central Magnet's Spotlight Award-winning SEVON ASKEW
by Jeffrey Ellis - May 17, 2017

If the theater community had its own royal family and nobility, then it would make perfect sense that young Sevon Askew, recently awarded a Spotlight Award as best male soloist for his performance in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, would be a crown prince. The son of Susan Arnold Walsworth, who has appeared on numerous stages in the midstate, he's the nephew of David Arnold (perhaps best known for his portrayal of Shrek in the musical about the gentle green ogre - a role Sevon has played, as well) and Cat Arnold (who's currently onstage in ACT 1's Noises Off). Talent, it would seem, runs through certain families. (more...)

BWW Interview: KAYLA BAILEY ("INTO THE WOODS") at Thousand Oaks High School
by Cary Ginell - May 17, 2017

Any time a high school theater department takes on a Stephen Sondheim musical, the intensity level cranks up a notch. So when drama teacher Joseph Donia took on Into the Woods, which the school last did in 2008, he needed some extra expertise behind the scenes to deal with Sondheim's uniquely difficult vocal score. Enter Kayla Bailey, a graduate of Oaks Christian High School (2007), Cal Lutheran University (2011), and a former Miss Ventura County (2012), who has been seen locally mainly as a performer. Donia chose Bailey to be his vocal director despite Bailey never having served in that capacity before. But when, as the saying goes, opportunity knocks, you go for it, and Bailey, who has a uniquely positive spin on life, leaped in feet first and has been having the time of her life. We spoke with Kayla in between performances about this unique experience, one which has already had a major effect on her career outlook going forward. (more...)
