According to the New York Times, despite the legendary comedienne's stage credits, the lights of Broadway will not dim in memory of Joan Rivers. Broadway League executive director Charlotte St. Martin told NYT: "Under our criteria people need to have been very active recently in the theater, or else be synonymous with Broadway - people who made their careers here, or kept it up.' Rivers was taken to Mount Sinai hospital in New York City, and later put into a medically induced coma and put on life support. She was 81. We are sad to report the news that Joan Rivers died at 1:17pm this afternoon, at 81 years old. Rivers was undergoing a procedure on her vocal cords last Thursday, during which she stopped breathing. She was quickly rushed to Mount Sinai hospital in New York City, where she was admitted in critical condition, and later upgraded to stable as she was put into a medically induced coma and put on life support. Movies filmed in New York City that tapped into the turmoil, chaos, and social and cultural energies of the late 1960s and early 1970s are the subject of the screening series Fun City: New York in the Movies 1967-75, curated by film critic and historian J. Hoberman. The series, which will be accompanied by a new monograph written by Hoberman, includes nineteen films, and will be presented by Museum of the Moving Image from August 10 through September 1. The films include established classics such as Rosemary's Baby, The French Connection, Midnight Cowboy, and Dog Day Afternoon, as well as lesser known films such as The Angel Levine, Bye Bye Braverman, and Cotton Comes to Harlem. Reports this weekend have confirmed that there has been no progress for Joan Rivers, who is said to still be in a medically induced coma and fully dependent on life support machines. While Mt. Sheila Frazier Set for SUPERFLY Screening at Museum of the Moving Image, 8/16

Museum of the Moving Image will present a special screening of Gordon Parks, Jr.'s Superfly, the seminal urban crime drama set in 1972 New York City, starring Ron O'Neal, Carl Lee, and Sheila Frazier, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The film's now classic soundtrack—written, produced, and performed by the legendary Curtis Mayfield—is one of the few soundtracks to have out-grossed its film. The special event on Friday, August 16, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. begins with a screening of Superfly in 35mm (96 mins.), with co-star Sheila Frazier in person for a Q&A, followed by a “Best Superfly Outfit” contest and vocal competition for best a cappella singer of a verse from a song on the Superfly soundtrack, emceed by film producer and Museum trustee Warrington Hudlin.
