BWW Reviews: LOVE AGAIN Premieres at Group RepBWW Reviews: LOVE AGAIN Premieres at Group Rep
by Don Grigware - May 20, 2015

It is refreshing in this day and age to see an attempt to create a new musical. With few exceptions, it appears to be a dying art. If not, we would not be witnessing a raft of old steady revivals on Broadway, off-Broadway and in regional venues across the globe. Doug Haverty and Adryan Russ, no strangers to successful musical ventures, have taken the topic of love and have created Love Again, a bold effort at showing the intermingling of different aspects of love with a semi-large cast. Under the steady hand of Kay Cole all manage to shine in one form or another and a lot of it works delightfully. There's much potential with some more work and readjustments to the book. Many of the songs are quite lovely, and love, in all of its shades and colors, is always a treat to experience. Love Again has its niche at Group rep in NoHo through June 28. (more...)

'If you build it they will come. If you want diversity in the theatre, you have to build that diversity from the ground up. You can't just expect it to happen.' Actor Kingsley Leggs is speaking with quiet intensity about his passion for theatre, music, and dance and his belief that theatre must not only please, but also educate and empower its audiences. These are beliefs he has honed in a long career which has taken him from his native St. Louis to Broadway, regional theatre, and television. As he recounts his story, he is taking a break on what he calls 'a three show day' at Maine State Music Theatre, where he is in the last week of performances of The Full Monty and set to open June 25th in Sister Act. He has just finished the morning rehearsal and will soon head over to the theatre for a matinee and evening show. For all the obvious demands of this schedule, he appears relaxed and animated. BWW Reviews: Cape Playhouse's THE VELOCITY OF AUTUMNBWW Reviews: Cape Playhouse's THE VELOCITY OF AUTUMN
by Kristen Morale - Jun 22, 2015

How does one go about explaining what playwright Eric Coble describes as "the speed of the end?" Assuming a person knows what the end looks like and how it will come about, the mere realization that each of our lives will someday end and that we must deal with the complete decay of who each of us once was as that life fades away is daunting; it's almost too finite yet still so simple an idea to understand completely. So, what would a woman faced with the elimination of all that she has ever been do when confronted with the prospect of change - a change that will destroy her foundation but improve her life to the extent of prolonging it in a personally undesirable way?The Cape Playhouse begins its 89th season with The Velocity of Autumn; directed by Skip Greer, this is a beauty of a story written by Eric Coble and now brought to the Playhouse following its recent Broadway run. SOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Thoughtful Wishes For CAMP 2: FREAKS IN NATURESOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Thoughtful Wishes For CAMP 2: FREAKS IN NATURE
by Pat Cerasaro - Jun 17, 2015

Last night, acclaimed director Todd Graff unexpectedly announced plans to film a follow-up to 2003 cult favorite theatre-themed movie musical CAMP titled CAMP 2: FREAKS IN NATURE set to feature fellow Tony Award-winning icons Patti LuPone and Donna Murphy, among others, inspiring Broadway babies to excitedly anticipate the many musical selections that could potentially be presented as part of the project. Of course, the original film famously featured a young Anna Kendrick memorably belting out the COMPANY 11 o'clocker 'The Ladies Who Lunch' in addiiton to an unforgettable recreation of the original Michael Bennett-staged mini masterpiece from PROMISES, PROMISES, 'Turkey Lurkey Time' - plus some standout original tunes by the likes of Michael Gore and Lynn Ahrens, too - not to mention Stephen Sondheim himself appearing onscreen in a cameo role. Now, Graff himself promises at least one showstopper to match the ones in the first film, relaying, 'We're going to introduce some fabulous new additions, like Donna Murphy, Patti LuPone and a bevy of other reigning Broadway divas performing a demented version of 'Steppin' To The Bad Side' from DREAMGIRLS to be staged by the one and only Jerry Mitchell.' So, now, let's speculate on some must-see moments we would relish seeing onscreen in the sequel. (more...)

SOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 More Norma Desmonds Ready For Their SUNSET BOULEVARD Close-UpSOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 More Norma Desmonds Ready For Their SUNSET BOULEVARD Close-Up
by Pat Cerasaro - Jul 20, 2015

Last week, I selected ten top picks for a major headliner to star as Norma Desmond in a potential future stage and/or screen version of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black and Christopher Hampton's Tony Award-winning Best Musical SUNSET BOULEVARD in honor of both the show's anniversary of its West End opening and recent news that Glenn Close is considering a return to her Tony-winning role in an upcoming revival. As a result of that column, BroadwayWorld readers took the title of this column to heart and sounded off on some of their ideal choices for a leading lady with major star quality to tackle the unforgettable role in a future production - and, what fabulous choices they are! Among the reader submissions, Ilene Argento posited, 'If not Patti Lupone, maybe Meryl Streep (with some more singing lessons!), but it should be Patti (although Patti plus ALW will probably never happen again).' while Brian Lipensky wrote, 'Glenn Close can still play her. That said, Meryl Streep can pull it off. We know she can sing and play characters with psychological problems. Susan Sarandon also. Maybe even Emma Thompson.' Furthermore, Jonathan Caplan offered, 'ANNIE LENNOX. Period. Well, if it can't be Elaine Paige, then absolutely, Annie Lennox. I said this before the musical ever opened, and I stand by it....ANNIE LENNOX!!!!!!' whereas David Macaluso relayed, 'Seriously. With a good director, in a film. LIZA! she could be AMAZING.' Other suggestions sure to inspire discussion included Cher, Lady Gaga, Ruthie Henshall, Donna Murphy and even Caitlyn Jenner. So, without further ado, here are ten more delectable choices for a new Norma Desmond for 2015. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Get the Wine! Cape Playhouse Presents WOMEN IN JEOPARDYBWW Reviews: Get the Wine! Cape Playhouse Presents WOMEN IN JEOPARDY
by Kristen Morale - Jul 20, 2015

This is one show for which it is imperative that someone yells "Don't forget the wine!" so that each character is mentally prepared for what mess is to come. Now that that has been said and everyone has been sufficiently warned, the audience is give a trio of middle-aged, divorced women who spend their free time in book clubs, Spanish classes and holding female-only sleepovers; if there is not already wine visible on the table, someone is bound to pull it out of her handbag or from some hidden compartment soon enough. There is Mary, Jo and Liz: three women who are more adventurous and eager to prove themselves right than one would ever imagine; between boyfriends, daughters' boyfriends and their images as older women who just need the non-killer type of guy to make their lives that much more dramatic, the Cape Playhouse's production of Women in Jeopardy provides enough excitement and whodunit humor that will have audiences captivated until the final moment when our three heroines are finally able to put the wine down.
