BWW Review: Dancing Through The Metaphysical Tree Of Life in SVB ROSA
by Olga El - Oct 31, 2016

Svb Rosa showcases twelve vignettes that embrace the divine feminine through video art, spoken word, interlacings of original and popular music and dance fusion rooted in vocabulary from women-created Middle Eastern and North African dance traditions. It is the latest production from Lunaris, a group that seeks to 'physically manifest the workings of the soul and spirit through the art of dance, ritual and theater.' Each piece is representative of a branch on the Kabbalistic tree of life and heavily incorporates symbolism from Western ceremonial mysticism. (more...)

BWW Interview: Kate Baldwin on Exploring Different Sides of Herself in New Feinstein's/54 Below Show and the 'Full Circle' of Working with Bette Midler
by Casey Mink - Oct 21, 2016

This spring, Kate Baldwin will appear in one of the most highly anticipated shows of the season, the Bette Midler-starring revival of HELLO, DOLLY! Baldwin will once again be portraying the fun-loving and yearning Irene Molloy, a role which she had previously taken on at the Paper Mill Playhouse a decade ago. Prior to stepping back into Molloy's shoes, though, Baldwin will return to Feinstein's/54 Below to perform a brand new solo show, EXTRAORDINARY MACHINE, singing the songs of some of her favorite artists. Busy as she is, BroadwayWorld had a chance to chat with Baldwin ahead of her four-show engagement at the cabaret venue, the first of which kicks off on October 25. Baldwin, sincerely affable and reflective, shared the 'Full Circle' nature of costarring alongside Bette Midler (she may have once made the ill-advised decision to sing 'The Rose' at a middle school talent show), how she uses her solo concerts to introspect her life and career, and why she, like many others surely, often asks herself, 'What would Gavin Creel do?' So, bust out your leather, fishnets, and platform boots and practice all of your favorite one-liners, because no matter where you live, there is likely a theatre company putting on a production close by. EADO PLAYHOUSE Opens its Doors For the First Time This November
by BWW News Desk - Oct 17, 2016

'EaDo Playhouse?! We know what you're thinking… Okay, we assume to know what you're thinking… 'A) Do we really need another theater in Houston? B) Are they going to change their name next year? 3) Did I turn the stove off?' Honestly, we're thinking the same thing... But, hey, we're just trying to level out the arts-venue to Chipotle ratio in Houston. No, but seriously… In a world where a tiny-handed talking Cheeto in a toupee could be the next President of the United States, we feel that it's important for our community to bond together.  (more...)

BWW Recap: Everything Must Be Burned Clean on WESTWORLD
by Jessica Naftaly - Nov 28, 2016

WESTWORLD's penultimate episode entitled 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' just aired last night and as we head into the finale of the first season, the show proves it's not holding back any of its punches. The show has certainly taken on a bigger life in the online community with fan theorizing and discussion and WESTWORLD does what most shows should follow suit in revealing answers to questions the fans are asking and are already forming their own answers to. By doing so, they avoid the probable let down in the future that comes with an anticlimactic reveal of something the consumers have been building up in their heads for so long in such a grandiose way that the final product could never hold a candle to what they were imagining it to be. They also prove that the show overall, as a narrative and a piece of thematic storytelling, isn't about the twists, despite their existence in the narrative. They exist, but as the theories prove by being completely true, the information was all there from the beginning and the questions about consciousness, autonomy, and humanity are the real grounding force of the epic scale drama that is WESTWORLD. Guest Blog: Composer Luke Bateman on MR POPPER'S PENGUINS
by Guest Blog: Luke Bateman - Nov 24, 2016

I like to write tunes. By tunes I mean real hummable melodies. Some people scoff at this as if 'that's easy' or 'not exactly art', but I thoroughly disagree. Lots of songwriters write both music and lyrics, and I've given lyrics a go, but I like to stick to the music. In my opinion, my job is to serve a lyric. A great melody can carry a poor lyric, but a good lyric sure as hell ain't gonna carry a bad tune. When you combine both a great lyric and a great melody then you've hit the jackpot. (more...)

BWW INTERVIEW: Laura Osnes Reflects on Her Journey to Broadway Ahead of Feinstein's/54 Below Show THE PATHS NOT TAKEN, and Why THE BANDSTAND is More Relevant Than Ever
by Casey Mink - Nov 23, 2016

Laura Osnes' journey to Broadway was anything but ordinary. Having competed on the reality series GREASE: YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT, she went on to win and make her Great White Way debut as a brunette Sandy in 2007. She proceeded to make craterous impressions on Broadway, replacing Kelli O'Hara in Lincoln Center's SOUTH PACIFIC, as well as originating the role of Bonnie in BONNIE & CLYDE, earning the first of her Tony nominations, followed by the titular Cinderella in Broadway's first production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, for which she earned her second. Osnes will return to Feinstein's/54 Below on November 27, kicking off a string of four shows in which she travels down the roads that might have been, performing songs from roles she nearly booked but, for one reason or another, never came to be. BroadwayWorld chatted with the sweet-as-pie multi-talent about why her forthcoming Broadway gig, THE BANDSTAND, is a vital piece of theater, her co-star Corey Cott, and the inspiration for her unusual cabaret premise (here's a spoiler: Osnes keeps a literal binder in her closet labeled 'Songs I Learned for Auditions'). Actress/singer Maggie Randolph won the prestigious LA's Next Great Stage Star 2016 last winter. Upon witnessing her amazing vocal range and spunky personality laced with oodles of warmth, it is easy to understand why. On Sunday November 20, Randolph premiered her LA Cabaret show Home Again to an SRO audience at Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal. Accompanying her at the piano were musical director Richard Berent, Kerry Fenster on guitar and Ksenia Rozhdestvenskaya on violin. BWW Review: THE FLYING DUTCHMAN Vanishes Too Quickly from Austin, TX
by Amy Bradley - Nov 17, 2016

Presented during The Austin's Opera's 30th anniversary season, THE FLYING DUTCHMAN commands the historic Long Center's stage with a diverse, collective cast and belting operatic sequences. The origins of the story of The Flying Dutchman are rather skewed between timelines. The story first appeared in Travels in various parts Europe, Asia, and Africa in 1790 by John MacDonald, and again when Richard Wagner's operatic rendition came to life in 1843, after being adapted from an episode of Heinrich Heine's satirical novel The Memoirs of Mister von Schnabelewopski. More modernly, the story of The Flying Dutchman is told through the highly loved film series, The Pirates of The Carribean. Regardless of the interpretations by creative minds, one fact remains true - The Flying Dutchman refers to a ghostly ship destined to sail the seas for all eternity. Richard Wagner's rendition, sure to please both critics and audiences alike, is bringing this haunted tale to life with the reputation of precision that precedes The Austin Opera. (more...)
