by Jessica Naftaly - Sep 8, 2014

Okay so here we are! Episode one of the final season of Boardwalk Empire entitled 'Golden Days for Boys and Girls'! It kicked off in an interesting and beautifully visual fashion as we are met with an opening shot of boys diving for coins underwater. The cinematography in that scene, and in the entire episode is notably gorgeous. Voicing over this stunning imagery is a poem read aloud by a female voice. “Be honest and true, boys! /Whatever you do, boys /Let this be your motto through life.” This poem bookends the episode as it's featured during the flashbacks (yes flashbacks!) of young Nucky Thompson throughout the episode. by Linda Hodges and Nick Hodges - Sep 29, 2014

The air was crackling with excitement on opening night for the much anticipated revival of Pippin at San Francisco's Golden Gate Theatre. And for good reason. The show won four Tony Awards last year including Best Musical Revival, with Diane Paulus taking home the Tony for Best Director. Patina Miller as the Leading Player took home Best Actress, while Andrea Martin won Best Featured Actress. Not to be outdone, the national tour signed Sasha Allen, Lucie Arnaz, and John Rubinstein, not to mention Canada's circus troupe, Les 7 doigts de la main. Talk about the wow factor. Pippin is an exuberant, extravaganza of a show and it plays now through October 19 at SHN's Golden Gate Theatre. (more...)

by Buster Spiller - Sep 29, 2014

In today's world, marriage is an optional life choice for couples versus previous generations where it was expected that adults would marry, procreate children, grow old, and eventually die having completed their primary life's function. Even though those family structures may have included outside children born out of wedlock by a husband committing adultery, children and their mothers who were either ignored or treated like they didn't exist, the primary family unit remained intact. In Melissa Ross's "Thinner than Water," currently in production at Kitchen Dog Theater, you realize despite advancements we have made as a global society in a number of areas, this component of the human condition is still alive and well. by BWW News Desk - Sep 19, 2014

Award-winning children's author, Danielle Leibovici, LMFT, has written and released #1 Amazon best-selling children's book 'Waiting for Emma: A Brother's Story' (For Siblings and Families with Babies in the NICU). This month begins Leibovici's campaign with the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in support of their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the families they serve. In honor of National Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Awareness Month, 100% of net proceeds from book sales will be donated. Books can be purchased and donated directly through CHKD, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, select retailers and signed copies are available through the author's website. After her own daughter sought treatment in the NICU at CHKD, Leibovici was asked by their medical community to create a children's book in support of all family members with a preemie or newborn in the NICU. 'It gives me great satisfaction that from such a dark time in our family's life, this beautiful book is here to touch and support the very families it was written for. A true Full Circle moment. Now with this special book and campaign with CHKD, families benefit, and the NICU benefits. It's a win, win!' Edward Karotkin, MD, a Professor of Pediatrics and a neonatologist at CHKD, raves; '...An exceptionally written and realistically illustrated children's book available today for siblings and families with NICU babies. The sensitivity, support, and useful resources for all family members, are invaluable. Bravo! Thank you, Danielle Leibovici.' Heather Wilson, NICU mother, shares, 'I didn't even realize the impact the NICU experience had taken on each of us. Joey, my son, completely opened up about his feeling after reading this book. I also learned that by not sharing my feelings, I was not leading by a good example. We are grateful for a book like this!' 'Waiting for Emma: A Brother's Story' received the Seal of Excellence from the Mom's Choice Awards and has taken the Bronze Medal for Best Children's Book in Non-Fiction, from Reader's Favorite. BWW Reviews: Moonlight Amphitheatre, Vista Rolls Out Red Carpet for CATCH ME IF YOU CANBWW Reviews: Moonlight Amphitheatre, Vista Rolls Out Red Carpet for CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
by Don Grigware - Sep 12, 2014

It used to be, in days gone by, that hit Broadway shows would be made into movies; now, it's the reverse. With a dearth of ideas for Broadway musicals, the trend lately has been to turn to the big screen and revamp a popular film for the stage, adding song and dance. Such was the case with 9 to 5 and later Legally Blonde engendering quite a bit of success. Those two had female stars at the core, so it's high time a male got some attention. Voila! Catch Me If You Can has a quirky real-life story about an anti-hero Frank Abagnale Jr. (Jacob Haren) who in the 60s was called the Johnny Appleseed of fraud. The outstanding creative team of book writer Terrence McNally and musical wizards Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman took an old idea and created an entertainingly fresh showcase around it. The resultant Catch Me If You Can which received several Tony Award nominations in 2012 - one win for Norbert Leo Butz as Best Featured Actor playing Agent Carl Hanratty - is now playing in its West Coast regional premiere in Vista at the Moonlight Amphitheatre with Josh Adamson essaying Hanratty. by Desiree Fantal - Sep 10, 2014

In the weeks leading up to the season premiere of FX's SONS OF ANARCHY, there was much talk about how gruesome and shocking the first few minutes of the show would be. Viewer discretion would be highly advised. Thinking back to many past episodes, this advisory seemed wise. The show started with a series of “Last season on SOA” clips to get you both excited for what was to come and angry about what had already occurred. Creator Kurt Sutter is known for toying with our emotions this way. The scenes transitioned to one of Jax (Charlie Hunnam) in prison, beating the hell out of some guy. I watched the premiere with a friend who was new to SOA. He asked who Jax's victim was and though I squinted my eyes to 20/20 vision, I couldn't tell who he was through all the blood, sweat and tears. (more...)

Hey Stranger Friends, it's your tried and true MADAM SECRETARY recapper and reviewer here, and this week had both McCord's, our Secretary and husband Henry, refusing to suffer fools gladly. Our Secretary had two healthy servings of issues on her plate this week, and once again the writers do not shy away from taking stories out of our recent, real-life headlines. One of my favorite and versatile character actors, Robert Kline, guest stars as Canadian Ambassador Clark, who is pressuring the Secretary to release a report that supports a controversial oil pipeline from Canada to the U.S., and negotiations to get inspectors back into Iran's nuclear program, are souring badly. by Pat Cerasaro - Oct 20, 2014

Today we are talking to the gifted composer and lyricist behind the earth-shattering score for Broadway's biggest recent hit, HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH, the versatile and passionate Stephen Trask. Shedding considerable light on the development of the idiosyncratic rock musical, Trask discusses his influences and the organic way in which the outre show developed from humble beginnings at downtown bar Squeezebox in the mid-1990s, to Off-Broadway hit at the turn of the new century all the way to the rapturously received feature film adaptation, and, now, the 2014 Broadway production. Trask also details his affection for Tony Award-winning lead actor Neil Patrick Harris and looks ahead to the new leading man donning the titular wig, Andrew Rannells. Additionally, Trask also shares news on the forthcoming sequel to HEDWIG currently being developed with John Cameron Mitchell and teases some of what we can expect from the hotly anticipated theatrical experience. Furthermore, Trask reflects on his own upbringing and musical influences and how that informed the composition of the score for HEDWIG, as well as his own favorite performers. Plus, Trask reflects on his fruitful career as a movie scorer in Hollywood and comments on his upcoming musical endeavors, including two original stage musicals - JUST THE BLACK KEYS, a real-life inspired original musical potentially involving Peter Askin and Michael Mayer, as well 15 MINUTES, a Studio 54-centric period piece written with Rick Elice - as well as much, much more. This season of PARENTHOOD has been definitely packed with enough drama, and the writers are brilliantly beginning to close up storylines while offering us new ones to keep us busy and immersed enough in the show that presumably we forget that it's ending in, like, December/January. It's a smart move, though as you'll see below, I think the new plot lines in the final episodes of the season — not to mention the season's shortened 13-episode run, which this week drops us down to just 9 (single digits, people!) — will seem a bit rushed given the time length. When I was 10 years old, I had the life altering good fortune to see A CHORUS LINE on Broadway. It was playing at the Shubert Theater and it offered a gift of magic that stayed with me from curtain up to curtain down, and beyond. I had been transported by the dancers and their stories; so when the show ended, I pleaded with my parents to let me wait at the stage door in Shubert Alley for the dancers to emerge. I didn't have lofty goals of meeting them or asking for their autographs, I just wanted to catch a reassuring glimpse that such creatures were real. (more...)
