BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS is a Phenomenal Adaptation of the Classic Stephen Sondheim MusicalBWW Review: INTO THE WOODS is a Phenomenal Adaptation of the Classic Stephen Sondheim Musical
by Alan Henry - Dec 19, 2014

It's no surprise Walt Disney Pictures has decided to bank on the popularity of the movie musical following the box office success of Les Miserables - what is a surprise is how successfully they've done so. Their first foray into the live-action movie musical, Into the Woods is everything you'd want from a movie musical - but doesn't compromise any of the brilliance of the original even if some modifications were made to fit the medium. BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS Is a Wish Come True for Fans of Both Theatre and FilmBWW Review: INTO THE WOODS Is a Wish Come True for Fans of Both Theatre and Film
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 19, 2014

For many musical theatre fans, a beloved Broadway musical, fairly faithfully, adapted into a stunning big screen success, is their most treasured of Christmas wishes. In recent years, however, the holidays have brought us near misses (LES MISERABLES), underwhelming disappointments (RENT), and outright abominations (NINE). However, Disney's INTO THE WOODS, opening nationwide on Christmas Day, is those musical theatre fans' wish fulfilled. With a cast of Hollywood A-listers and Broadway alums, all of whom prove more than capable of handling Stephen Sondheim's uniquely intricate and intellectual music and lyrics, this very well might be the most effectively adapted movie musical of the past half century. The lush orchestrations, the gorgeous settings, and the spectacular cast had a smile plastered on my face from the film's first note until its last. (more...)

by Don Grigware - Dec 16, 2014

For the last few years the uber talented Lythgoe family have been entertaining us at Christmastime, first at the El Portal in NoHo and now at the Pasadena Playhouse with a British style panto. A panto is an interactive entertainment that starts with a very contemporary retelling of a fairy tale such as Snow White, Cinderella, or in this case Sleeping Beauty and turns it into a fun imaginative show with music that will appeal to both children and their parents. There's usually an actor in drag (outrageous David Engel as Nanny Tickle, Aurora's nanny), a villain or villainess (Lucy Lawless as Carabosse))... and audience are encouraged to root for the heroes and HISS loudly at the villains. Lawless tries to sway and seize control over the audience by singing 'One Way or (more...)

The new musical VALLEY OF SONG opened to positive notices from critics. Left incomplete at Ivor Novello's death, Christopher Hassall finished the piece.
