BWW Review: Disney's NEWSIES Charming Family Fare
by Frank Benge - Sep 28, 2016

NEWSIES is a Disney Theatrical Productions musical based on their 1992 film Newsies. The original film took its inspiration from the Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. NEWSIES has a book by Harvey Fierstein with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman. It premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in 2011 and made its Broadway debut in 2012, where it played for 1004 performances. The stage version contains songs from the movie and several new numbers. Those who grew up on the film version will notice that this new adaptation has written out Jack's original love interest Sarah Jacobs as well as the New York Sun reporter Brian Denton, who writes about the Newsies. These characters have been replaced by a new character, Katherine Plumber, a reporter who is a composite of the characters from the original film. The North American tour, which is currently playing at the Bass Concert Hall, started in October 2014 and is ending its 43 week run on October 2, 2016 here in Austin, TX. (more...)

BWW Review: WET's REVOLT. SHE SAID. REVOLT AGAIN. Hits Hard but Not Always Coherently
by Jay Irwin - Sep 26, 2016

I've never been a fan of performance art as it tends to lose its message amidst the blur of being odd. I mean I'll never forget the piece I saw where a woman gave birth to herself only to be followed by a group of men beating her with pillows. Having said that, Washington Ensemble Theatre's current production of Alice Birch's play "Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again." is not completely performance art but there were a few moments where the outrageousness of the performance got in the way of the message. But we'll get to that in a minute. (more...)

BWW Review: FATHER COMES HOME FROM THE WARS, Royal Court, 22 September 2016
by Marianka Swain - Sep 23, 2016

The current racial crisis in America might seem too urgent, too horrific, for us to be constantly seeking historical stories, but Suzan-Lori Parks's play cycle makes a vividly articulate case for the long thread running from 19th-century slavery to 2016 debate over entrenched ethnic hierarchies and the nature of freedom. Originally staged at New York's Public Theater in 2014, Jo Bonney's acclaimed production now makes a welcome visit to the Court, where this intimate epic unspools unhurriedly and mesmerisingly. BWW Review: STAGES St. Louis' Inspirational SISTER ACT
by Chris Gibson - Sep 19, 2016

STAGES St. Louis closes their 30th season with SISTER ACT, a musical based on the hit 1992 film of the same name, although this might actually be more entertaining in a lot of ways. Having seen a touring production a few years back, I was a bit concerned about some of the rougher edges that the show presents. But, this regional premier staging focuses on the inspirational aspects, and that lightens the mood considerably, producing delightful results in the process. This is a splendidly rendered production, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. (more...)
