Photo Flash: OF MICE AND MEN is Brought to Life at Tacoma Little Theatre
by BWW News Desk - Jan 22, 2017

Tacoma Little Theatre begins 2017 with John Steinbeck's classic tale, OF MICE AND MEN, brought to life through the direction of Niclas Olson.  Two drifters, George and his friend Lennie, with delusions of living off the 'fat of the land,' have just arrived at a ranch to work for enough money to buy their own place. Lennie is a man-child, a little boy in the body of a dangerously powerful man. It's Lennie's obsessions with things soft and cuddly that have made George cautious about who the gentle giant, with his brute strength, associates with. His promise to allow Lennie to 'tend to the rabbits' on their future land keeps Lennie calm, amidst distractions, as the overgrown child needs constant reassurance. But when a ranch Boss' wife is found dead in the barn with a broken neck, it's obvious that Lennie, albeit accidentally, killed her. George, now worried about his own safety, knows exactly where Lennie has gone to hide, and he meets him there. Realizing they can't run away anymore, George is faced with a moral question: How should he deal with Lennie before the ranchers find him and take matters into their own hands? (more...)

BWW Review: ANNIE at Bass Performance Hall
by Kyle Christopher West - Jan 19, 2017

It's fitting that the weather on opening night of ANNIE as Bass Hall was gloomy and quite wet. Despite the redundant anthem boasting 'the sun'll come out tomorrow,' the quality of the current tour didn't seem so bright. With generally unremarkable performances across the board, any themes of hope or optimism felt anything but inspiring. (more...)

BWW Review: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at the Detroit Opera House
by Anton Anderssen - Jan 19, 2017

Are you ready for a new and improved version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA? I love the original, which I first saw in California, when Robert Guillaume (star of Benson) played the role. Of course, I saw it in London's West End and on Broadway, but it's really fun to see the new version right here in Detroit. I know it's hard to believe that PHANTOM could ever be improved upon, but they've worked some magic. The chandelier is more spooky, the catacombs look more like a person actually lives there, the costumes are different, especially the stairway costume in part two - but in this version there is no grand staircase. This phantom uses a lot of pyrotechnics to accompany his magic. You will like the way they descend into the Phantom's lair; that bridge scene what shifted like a teeter totter has been replaced by really cool steps that protrude from dungeon walls. And the best part is at the very end, when the phantom vanishes; it's in a very different way, and I have no idea how he pulled it off. (more...)
