BWW Recap: Liza Attempts to Get Steamy and Sexy with Josh on This Week's YOUNGERBWW Recap: Liza Attempts to Get Steamy and Sexy with Josh on This Week's YOUNGER
by Matt Smith - Apr 7, 2015

When we open, Liza receives a text from Josh. She texts back “OKAY,” but deletes it before sending, continually rethinking and shortening her response to fit her 26-year-old persona. Really awesome, clever, and subtle way to show her continual struggle to adjust to the young adult world. Though, she's clearly progressing and gaining confidence in her new “age” — with a smirky smile, she knows immediately “OKAY” will not fly and “K” with an emoticon is totally the way to go. Shimmering and strutting with drag queen elegance, the TONY Award winning Best Musical of 2013, KINKY BOOTS, opened at Shea's Buffalo Theatre last night to rapturous applause by the near capacity audience. With an infectious score by 80's pop icon Cyndi Lauper as well as a fun and often touching book by Harvey Fierstein, KINKY BOOTS tells the dual story of a failing men's shoe factory in suburban England run by the son (Charlie) of the recently deceased owner and his chance encounter with an over the top drag queen named Lola. These two unlikely characters surreptitiously meet at a time when both need each other's help. Charlie is struggling to find a niche market for his shoe factory and Lola and her fellow drag queens are in need of some boots that can support a man's physique. (more...)

by Shari Barrett - Apr 17, 2015

What does it take to become a charismatic spiritual leader, one who has people questioning and empowering their own faith? Is it possible in our media soaked society to grab the attention of millions of people simply by speaking your mind and sharing your faith, ultimately proving the power of positive thinking? THE POWER OF DUFF is ultimately about a person who is fundamentally ambivalent about religion, even about spirituality - who undergoes an emotional transformation, which in turn leads him to a position of being a suddenly looked-to spiritual leader even as his ambivalence continues. BWW Reviews: Park Square Theatre is Currently Presenting Two Small Gems on its Two Stages - SHOOTING STAR and THE OTHER PLACEBWW Reviews: Park Square Theatre is Currently Presenting Two Small Gems on its Two Stages - SHOOTING STAR and THE OTHER PLACE
by Jill Schafer - Apr 13, 2015

I don't know if you've noticed, but there's something exciting going on in downtown St. Paul. In what's usually regarded as the sleepier of the Twin Cities, Park Square Theatre has recently opened a second stage in the Historic Hamm Building on lovely 7th Place. This extra space has allowed them to do some great things in the last few months, including producing regional premieres, partnering with local theater companies (look for shows by Sandbox Theatre, Theatre Pro Rata, and Girl Friday Productions this spring and summer), an increased focus on diversity, and continuing their commitment to students. They currently have three fantastic shows playing on the two stages, including student matinees of an effectively condensed ROMEO AND JULIET. But for us grown-ups, the two stages offer two very different but both excellent choices: the bittersweet comedy SHOOTING STAR on the Proscenium Stage, and the emotional drama THE OTHER PLACE on the new Boss Stage. Read on to make your choice, but hurry, both shows close on April 19. (more...)

In 1948, a decade before Motown, John Dolphin opened his soon-to-be world famous Dolphin's of Hollywood record store in South Los Angeles, just off legendary Central Avenue, but his contributions to music and the formative years of rock 'n' roll have often been overlooked. Based on the book "Recorded In Hollywood: The John Dolphin Story," this new musical features 16 original songs by Andy Cooper to match the musical era of the 1950s, as well as hit cover songs associated with the story including Sam Cooke's "You Send Me," The Penguins' "Earth Angel" and "Wheel Of Fortune" by The Hollywood Flames.
