Berliner Ensemble, Robert Wilson, and Rufus Wainwright to Bring SHAKESPEARE'S SONNETS to BAM, 10/7-12

The Bard is more modern and alive than ever in visionary Robert Wilson's Shakespeare's Sonnets, a contemporary take on 25 specially chosen sonnets from Shakespeare's canon. Set to a sweeping score composed by the renowned Rufus Wainwright, a genre-bending mix of medieval German Minnesang, classical, pop, and cabaret rock is performed by Bertolt Brecht's historic Berliner Ensemble. The sonnets were pared down and selected by Berliner dramaturge Jutta Ferbers who deftly adapted these captivating poems that were not originally intended for the theater. The production was first staged in Berlin in 2009 for the fourth centennial of the publishing of the sonnets. The production's world premiere was in April 2009 in Berlin and still runs in the Berliner Ensemble's repertory. (more...)

Willem de Rooij to Create Ten-Foot-Tall Floral Sculpture for Jewish Museum's Lobby

From October 31, 2014 through April 20, 2015, the Jewish Museum's lobby will feature a site-specific floral sculpture by Dutch artist Willem de Rooij titled Bouquet XI. The artist's first solo presentation at a New York museum, Bouquet XI is a nearly ten-foot-tall floral sculpture comprised of colorful and diverse Middle Eastern flora. This work is the third iteration of Using Walls, Floors, and Ceilings, a series showcasing new works by artists from around the globe in the Skirball Lobby. The series builds on the Museum's 1970s program called Using Walls, which featured the work of 14 up-and-coming international artists of the time such as Richard Artschwager, Sol Lewitt, Richard Tuttle, and others. Now, nearly 45 years later, the Museum is revisiting this moment in its history by showcasing new work by emerging artists from around the globe. (more...)

Guggenheim Foundation announced today that 1,715 confirmed submissions have been received in response to Stage One of the open, anonymous, international, two-stage competition for the design of a proposed Guggenheim museum in the Finnish capital of Helsinki. The submissions represent the largest number of entries recorded for a competition of this kind, surpassing the 2002 competition for the Grand Egyptian Museum, which received 1,557 entries, and the largest architectural competition in Helsinki, for the Helsinki Central Library, which attracted 544 entries in 2012. Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra to Perform at Severance Hall, 10/7

For the first time in their 91-year history, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, “one of the leading European orchestras” (The Independent), will tour the U.S., visiting four major markets in October. The Orchestra, under the direction of its Chief Conductor Muhai Tang, will appear first at Symphony Hall in Chicago on October 6th, then at Severance Hall in Cleveland on October 7th, at Strathmore Music Center in North Bethesda, MD on October 8th, and at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium in New York City on October 9th. The ensemble will bring two programs on tour, performing repertoire ranging from Khachaturian to Tchaikovsky to Sibelius. At Severance Hall and the Strathmore Center, the Orchestra will add a ballet suite by Stevan Hristi?, a founder and first principal conductor of the Orchestra (1923-1934).
