Ripped straight from tabloid headlines, Bat Boy: The Musical is a classic love story with a wicked bite! Based on a story published in the 'Weekly World News' in 1992, Bat Boy: The Musical is a comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. For lack of a better solution, the local sheriff (Brian Chambers) brings the Bat Boy (Colton Berry) to the home of the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker (Kyle Ezer). Eventually, Bat Boy is accepted as a member of the Parker family, and taught to act like a 'normal' boy by the veterinarian's wife, Meredith (Crystyl Swanson), and their teenage daughter, Shelley (Tori Shoemaker). Madness ensues as the townsfolk (Jake Frank, Luke Hamilton, Derrien Kellum, Nicole Norton and Megan Vaughn) investigate a mysterious cow-killing plague and its suspicious connection to the Bat Boy Bat Boy: The Musical takes a comic book blast at horror movies and is set to an infectious pop-rock score. Award-winning Summer Stock Austin will open its 10th Anniversary Season with the first show they ever produced, FOOTLOOSE. Footloose, the perfect summer musical, is packed with exhilarating dancing, vibrantly vintage 80s costumes, and a score filled with music that defined an era. Footloose will be directed and choreographed by SSA Co-Founder Ginger Morris. The 2014 season will also include Kander & Ebb's sizzling Broadway Blockbuster, CHICAGO. This sharp-edged satire, set in the roaring 20s, features a dazzling score that inspired immortal staging by Bob Fosse. SSA Co-Founder, Michael McKelvey directs Chicago with choreography by Rocker Verastique. Playwrights Theatre Announces 2014 New Jersey Young Playwrights Contest Winners

Playwrights Theatre is pleased to announce the winners of the 31st Annual New Jersey Young Playwrights Contest. From the 470 plays submitted by young writers throughout the state, a panel of theatre professionals has selected four High School plays, three Junior High School plays and four Elementary Schools plays. In each category, selection was blind; plays were selected without knowledge of playwrights' schools, grade or background. The 31st Annual New Jersey Young Playwrights Contest Festival will be held on June 2 and 3, 2014, as part of a partnership between Playwrights Theatre and Premiere Stages at Kean University. Select plays from this festival may be reprised at Playwrights Theatre's nationally-recognized Forum Reading Series in December 2014. This reading series brings together writers from all over the United States. (more...)

Still renovating their new space, the performance I attended was rough around the edges. The 2014 Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards ceremony took place at Paper Mill Playhouse on Tuesday, June 3rd at 7:30pm with an audience of over 1,200. Princeton Day School came out on top, winning Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical for their production of Urinetown. Stephen Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics and James Goldman wrote the book for this highly entertaining production. Follies opened on Broadway in 1971 at the Winter Garden Theatre.
